duckett is talking to his dead "pop" as mia is talking to her dead "mum". The mum is telling mia that her dad is not real and that is going to hurt her; "pop" is telling duckett that his brother is not real and is going to hurt a lot of people and has to stab him. the spirt is not her mum's because the spirits you meet via the hand are those of the people who died while possessed and mia's mother wasnt possessed.

The thing I really liked about the film and its horror is that it both were consistent with rules that were established, and if you view the film's plot against the framework of the rules of the game they explained, then everything makes sense. Both Riley and Mia exceeded the 90 second time limit, so both already had the ghosts attached to them. They also were not sure whether or not they blew out Riley's candle when he was acting out while possessed, which can explain why the ghosts that latched on to him had stronger influence. But the resolution to their problem was given by Duckett's brother when he told them that the body will reject the ghosts eventually given time... Which also explains why the ghosts were bent on having Mia kill Riley so much, because that rejection was already happening, as hinted at when Jade told Mia Riley woke up briefly as himself. They wanted to Riley dead ASAP because as stated in the rules "if you die while they are in you, they'll have you forever".... Well guess who died at the end and is now stuck as a spirit on the other end of the handshake game? They didn't get Riley but they got Mia. And her fate makes sense within the logic and rules established by the movie. Which is fucking great because I feel like not enough horror movies bother being consistent with rules they establish.

The reason why Mia wasnāt talking to her mom, was her mom killed herself from depression, she wasnāt possessed then killedherself so she wouldnāt have gone to the afterlife of the game. She wouldāve gone to where everyone else dies. The people that played the game got to talk to people who died also playing the game. And you might say, weāll how did it start, who was the first person to die from the hand game? And thatās all lore for the sequel to explain if there ever will be one.

The spirit that possessed Mia wasn't "cheryl" who was crawling around. The spirit who possessed Mia was the drowned woman she saw when she first held the hand and said, "i let you in" to. She went over the 90 seconds, and this spirit stayed with Mia, imitating her mum and manipulating her throughout.

The theory about Mia holding the other hand at the end, is mind blowing. Never thought of that. If there would be the case of a sequel, they SHOULD explore the other one, also. Also, when Daniel is possessed, my theory is that he looks actually at JADE, telling her, that he does not like it when she touches him.

Imagine a drink of water after wandering the desert. Now consider momentarily returning to the world of the living after wandering the empty darkness of death. Those spirits are euphoric in their borrowed bodies. And that euphoria is the high those teens get. The high of contact after loneliness, isolation and touch starvation. The spirits are lonely and starved for contact. They'll say and do anything to stay.
