Every year, the NYC Transit Museum, in conjunction with the NYC subway, has an event in September known as the Parade of Trains. During the event, vintage trains operate along the bucolic Brighton line. This year's event featured three trains- the BU Gate Cars, the BRT/BMT Standards, and the R1/ R9.
The BU Gate Cars were built in 1907. They're the oldest cars in the NYC Transit Museum fleet. They're noted for their wooden body and exterior platforms (for liability reasons, passengers were not allowed to ride on the platforms during the event).
The BRT/ BMT Standards were built in 1915. They have a similar transverse seating arrangement as the R44, R46, and R68. They also have the coolest railfan window. The standards have a durable metal exterior. It's last run in revenue service was on August 4, 1969 on the Myrtle Avenue El- two months before the Myrtle Avenue El was torn down.
The R1/ R9, built in 1931, are noted for their dark green exterior. In addition to the Parade of Trains, they are often used on Transit Museum excursions to the Rockaways and on the Holiday nostalgia trains.
Enjoy the ride!
