When she says take pictures, TAKE PICTURES OF EVERYTHING. My last landlord tried to take $450 out of my security deposit because the last tenant bent a few of the blinds. Also, if you can get a summer job before college, get one just so you can apply for a student credit card to build credit and earn cash back. I got the discover student credit card and was able to get my credit score up to 760 by the time I was ready to move out, just by buying groceries and immediately paying it off.

My steps to moving out:
- 1. Find a place, preferably a friend's place or a cheap one in a semi-non sketchy place, work until you have enough for at least 1-3 months of rent plus transportation to the new place
- 2. Pack your largest, sturdiest backpack with a sleep system (mine was a poncho, poncho liner, casualty blanket and a reflective blanket), 2 to 3 changes of clothes (try to get stuff that is quick drying/athletic multi season clothing and have 1 change of "interview" clothes)
- 3. buy tickets or whatever you need to get from point A to B, preferably a very soon ticket date so that your parents don't notice something off about you before you disappear, sweep up your traces as soon as possible (change phone num if they pay for your plan, etc.)
- 4. Become a monk, cause your new favourite meal is water every 1-2 hours to make you not that hungry while you aggressively job search
- 5. Abuse free wifi from cafƩs and cheap gym memberships for showers and stuff to keep yourself presentable
Congratulations, shit sucks but hooo fuck I kinda did enjoy the suckage

I CANNOT TELL YOU DESPERATELY I NEEDED THIS VIDEO! I'm a sophomore in high school atm and I've wanted to start looking for colleges and universities I can attend in the future because I just want to be prepared and my mom comes down like a jack hammer telling me that I will NOT move out until I'm married and I just can't take it!!! She's so controlling because my older sister moved out and went to live in Chicago and hasn't come back in three years despite the fact that she has financial problems and can't always make ends meet. I kinda understand why she does that but now my parents are so desperate to keep me at home because of this and I'm so upset about this and need to figure out what to do.

4:38 i would say " never going to see that money again" is kind of the wrong mind set, because you do see that money again, every day. it's in the place you are living. i found when i swapped to that mentality that helped me not think of it as wasting money and helped me to keep it prioritized more ( when i was young i'd find myself strapped for rent often which should definitely not put yourself in that position.)

No joke I owe you my first born or like a really really nice dinner at a fancy restaurant because this video is SO helpful!!! Out here actually taking notes and shit. Very nervous and scared to be moving out of a toxic household but this helps calm my worries so much. Just the way you break absolutely everything down makes it feel so manageable and just....possible. It feels possible. This video is just a love letter of "You can do it!!" ššš

This actually really helps. I am about to turn 22 and I still love with my parents. I just go to Uni in the same city and because of the pandemic etc. I just didnāt feel like moving out. But I feel like I am missing so much of the college experience, especially cuz my parents are quite strict. I canāt wait to move out but I literally donāt know how to 80% of it

I moved out for the second time about a week about into my second apartment and I can say that you can find better offers if you go in person to search for apartments. I got my apartment (2 bed, 1 bath, with patio) for 525 rent and all utilities included except for electricity. You really can find good deals most just donāt have websites and have cheap deals :) if you have other questions go ahead and ask me I am happy to answer every question :p

So yt suggested this to me, and I've been living with my family for three years. I had to move back home after living on my own for 4 years bc I was so depressed. And today I don't have the means to move out yet, but this helped me visualize the plans I have to make to actually do it. Thank you.
Also if there are any older gen z/younger millenials still living with your parents, pls say hi. I want to feel less alone in this.

As someone who has moved over 10 times in their life, even moved countries, this is some great advice. Off the top of my head, something to consider is your laundry situation. Is there a washing machine in your unit? Is there a communal laundry room for your building? Will you need to rely on a laundromat that you have to walk or drive to? I've lived and dealt with all three situations, and for me personally having to rely on a laundromat was the least convenient. Figure out what you're willing to deal with, cause you're going to be stuck with it for however long you live in that apartment.
Another tip: keep records (re: emails preferably, even texts, or hand written) of any requests you make to your landlord. Need something fixed? Keep a record of this interaction/conversation just in case your landlord may try to dump the expenses on you. This is where you need to read the fine print of your lease because your landlord may state in it how much they're willing to cover in case of damage, and what you must pay on your own.

a little free safety tip: put visible things on your window sills!! if someone is looking for a quick break-in, they will avoid houses with lots of stuff to knock over and make noise. plants, little treasures, even hanging strings of bells from your curtain rods make cute decorations and great deterrents from break-ins!!
