✨ANASTASIA'S VILLAIN STORY✨

Welcome to Russia in the 1900’s! Our story follows a similar trajectory to the original film we all know and love, the Tsar and his family were overthrown leaving one lost, lonely little girl, Anya.

Jump forward 10 or so years and Anya has been on a whirlwind journey to discover who she really is, culminating in her meeting with her Grandma for the first time to tell her that she is the lost princess Anastasia. Full of hope and relief to finally have the family she dreamed of, Anya’s heart races with anticipation, ready to take on her new life. But unlike the original story, where Anya presents the music box and is welcomed back with open arms, her Grandma rejects her claim. Even the music box and pendant can't convince her of Anya’s Legitimacy. She accuses Anya of lying, telling her that she was conned into believing she was the lost princess Anastasia by Dimitri and has now come to harass an old grieving woman. Anya takes a step closer and her Grandma calls the guards. Anya races outside, but as she exits the house all she sees are police lining the streets. Desperately, she looks around for Dimitri, surely he didn't lie to her? Surely he didn't leave her? Only to find that he has abandoned her in her time of need, betraying her just as she was always afraid he would. Heartbroken and furious, Anya races through the streets of Paris.

Eventually, after what feels like hours of running, Anya finds a quiet spot to hide away from any threat. In this moment she finally has time to collect her thoughts, she has lost the one person she believed to be her family, she has lost the man that she thought she loved and she has lost all hope. Dimitri was lying this whole time, he didn't care for her, he saw a vulnerable person to make a quick buck from and ran when it was his neck on the line. Her Grandmother, cruel and callous, refused to even consider what Anya had told her and would rather lock her away than have a discussion. But Anya knows who she is, she is the lost princess Anastasia, heir to the throne. She felt it in her bones, she finally had her identity and wouldn't give up that easily.

As she slips silently through the streets her mind turns towards the family and life she could’ve had if things had gone differently, sure she can blame Dimitri, she can blame her Grandmother, but those truly at fault were those that killed her family and stole her birthright. The people that celebrated her family's demise. And so, as she wanders, Anastasia plots another path to the throne, if she couldn’t convince her grandmother of her legitimacy she would have to force her way there. She had never desired the throne, but she had been too powerless for too long and refused to allow anyone to have the opportunity to determine her fate ever again.

And so Anastasia’s plan begins, the Romanov curse is still alive and well and Rasputin is coming for her and so she sets a trap on a snowy bridge.

‘Little Anya finally come to give up this foolish game’ exclaims Rasputin from across the frost covered divide.

‘There is no point anymore’ says Anya as she creeps closer, ‘They abandoned me, my grandmother, dimitri, my family, I have nothing left’ Crocodile tears fall and her eyes zone in on the reliquary tied to Rasputins belt.

Rasputin's guard is down, feeling he has finally won his prize; he gloats as Anastasia creeps again closer.

‘Yes I suppose that is true, oh I always saw it ending like this, you crawling in defeat to finally end this charade. Smart really, it would’ve been exhausting to con-’

Anya grabs for the reliquary, snatching it from off of Rasputin's belt and makes a run for it. She runs and runs until she finally feels safe enough to stop. For a second she is perplexed, surely the reliquary’s spirits should have attacked her by now? But nothing, if anything they seem perfectly calm within her grasp. And so she speaks to the demons inside.

‘I don't know if you can hear me, but I have a deal for you’ She whispers into the night.

‘Make me the most powerful person in all Russia, so that no one can ever take what is mine from me ever again, and I will rise up as empress and allow you the true power you deserve, over an entire empire’

And the rest, as they say, is history.

Who are you hoping to see turn into a villain next?? Make sure to stream Anastasias villain song for clear skin - distrokid.com/hyperfollow/lydiathebard/anastasias-… MASSIVE thank you to Ben and Shrub for joining me on this project! You guys are magic ❤ And to Alex who was our little announcer guy at the start of the video Edit : I am now aware I made a spelling mistake, it is ‘die’ not ‘dye’. In my DEFENSE I thought the phrase meant clothing dye like when you dye something it won’t come out. I now see I am an utter MUG. There’s a reason I decided to sing and didn’t become a professional writer ✌️✌️

the best part is where Grandmother finally realizes Anastasia is legit, but she's not herself anymore, just a broken pieces left after her own grandmother rejected her.

I love how at the start anastasia was composed, emotionless, and soft spoken but as she starts going deeper into the song and deeper into her trauma, her true emotions and feelings start to show and starts going further into anger and madness.

I love that she isn’t super mad at her grandma or Dimitri, but she’s still unstable and they seem to be on thin ice. It’s even more creepy and unsettling.

Fun fact: In 1951, Marshal Georgy Zhukov (the conqueror of Berlin during WW2) got the chance to meet with Peter Ermakov, one of the guys who oversaw the execution of the Romanovs in 1918. Zhukov refused to shake Peter's hand upon learning who he was, saying something on the lines of "I do not shake the hands of murderers."

3:26 THIS PART! It feels like she’s recalling her more innocent times, while simultaneously losing the last of that same innocence before completely embracing the darkness and madness!

This is completely the best rewrite song ever for non-Disney princess Anastasia to becoming the empress of Russia with a vengeance on those who destroyed her family and abandoned her with no family and past so she won’t complete her right to the throne. She determined to prove them wrong but with her heart turned darker and never be the same again as the spirit agreed to help her as they sensed her pain and anger within. The beginning and ending had this Once Upon December before Journey to the Past, and I can’t help but think that the Dark of the Night would blend it perfectly into this song for Anastasia as she understood why her family had been killed by and what Rasputin said about bashing them with a curse.

Somehow this ending makes sense to me. That Anastasia never showed anger towards the people who practically killed her family surprises me.

I love how the little girl at 2:00 looks so much like young Anastasia. Like representing how Anya is doing the same thing to these people as was done to her, she's punishing an innocent child for a crime she did not commit simply because of her proximity to the crime.

The strong vocals, the storytelling, the new lyrics, the animatic, this is so good! I never thought I would see this one actually happen!

You know, this song is something more than just 'destroying sweet childhood memories' of this movie. I dunno how to phrase it.. it's like showing that it was a real tragedy, a crime the consequences of which do not disappear after putting an awkward 'We're sorry' banner next to a road and pretending to care about this loss on certain dates. Thanks for this

“You got what you wanted, but lost what you had.” That actually hit mad hard.

In case anyone is curious about what she said at the end: “das vedanya” means “goodbye/until we meet again” in Russian. It’s generally romanized as “do svidaniya” though, so it took a bit of digging to find the translation.

I don’t know the story of Anastasia very well, but your voice makes her story so sad, I feel so bad for her I just wanna give her a hug 🥺

Man, it was scarier to have her kidnap and imprison Dmitri and her grandmother rather than kill them. Great idea!!

I love how these turn the “I want” song from each princess to the “I am” song, further establishing their rile as the villain in the narrative. Or, if it is kept as an I want song, it gives off more “Hellfire” from Hunchback.

I love the way the crown and necklace look whenever she passes a window or when the green light hits them, but my absolute favorite part is 2:34 when we see every version of her that's existed, ending with a crying child because that's all that's really left of her now - a girl that misses her family.

At first i was like "what? how does getting revenge for her family's murder make her a villain?" then i realized "oh wait, dang, she became an absolutist monarch" Edit: Damn, sorry guys, i swear i originally intended this to be a simple, lighthearted jab at monarchy. I'll stop interacting with this section, but before that, here's what i think: The more i research history and sociology, the more resentment i cultivate to all forms of government with accentuated centralized power. There should NEVER be social, political or economic divides that stark, in any society. I can't comprehend why anyone would defend such a thing. For a time, that resentment made me relatively biased towards SOME forms of Communism and Anarcho-syndicalism - which i still think are fascinating - but now, i really just think a Parliamentary Modern Welfare State, with a weaker prime-minister, seems reasonable enough to defend. Also, i think using technology so people participate in regional politics more frequently could be a GREAT thing. Please, lets move on from monarchy lmao, it is NOT an unreasonable request.

Omg Lydia... Was... was that last sequence the Dowager Empress realizing that this actually was her granddaughter?! The Fear and realization in her eyes was just... a punch in the gut but also... omg! Such a detail. I love it. I also love that the end pose is literally done in such a way where it is clear she isn't just out for revenge but the look in her glowing eyes is desperation for the family she has long yearned for. To the point of derangement.... and insanity/madness... Oh my heart!
