The film is Burnham's film directorial debut. The plot follows the life and struggles of an eighth-grader, played by Elsie Fisher, during her last week of classes before graduating to high school. She struggles with social anxiety but produces vlogs giving life advice.

Burnham was inspired by his own struggles with anxiety when he began writing the screenplay in 2014. He had difficulty finding funding for the project until 2016. Shooting began in Suffern and White Plains, New York, in summer 2017. Fisher was cast after Burnham noticed her on YouTube; she led a cast including Josh Hamilton and Emily Robinson. Themes include heavy use of social media, mental health in Generation Z and sexuality and consent.

The film premiered on January 19, as part of the U.S. Dramatic Competition section of the 2018 Sundance Film Festival. After other festival screenings, it was released theatrically in the United States by A24 on July 13, 2018. Its R rating from the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) inspired criticism, as its decision blocked many eighth-grade viewers from seeing the film in theatres. In response, the distributors arranged free, unrated screenings across the U.S. Eighth Grade completed its North American run grossing $13.5 million on a $2 million budget.

Eighth Grade received acclaim from critics, with praise for Burnham's screenplay and direction and Fisher's performance, and was chosen by both the National Board of Review and American Film Institute as one of the Top 10 Films of 2018. The film received numerous awards and nominations and is nominated for four Independent Spirit Awards, including Best Feature, while Fisher was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Actress.

I worked on this film as a grip. BO came a chatted it up with me during a break in shooting. He was cool, seemed really consumed with trying to get it right. All in all he made a good first impression which is not usually the case when dealing with ppl in the film biz

Eight Grade is basically the film that Jason Reitman always said he would do but never did. Kids being kids. Not adults playing kids saying lines written by a filmmaker no real kid would ever say. Also if you ever want to come back to the movie for this channel again, the car scene seems downright mandatory. That's the most uncomfortable I felt in a movie last year. Way above any horror scene.

Easily one of my favorites of the year, everything about this just felt so real and beautiful. The acting is fantastic, the writing is perfect, the score is one of the most original I've heard in a while, this is just an incredible movie.

"We don't see the alarm, which I appreciate" Plot twist: the cellphone was the alarm from the beginning. Joking aside, good video, and good movie. : ) Considering how much of our lives is being consumed by cellphones and social media, I wonder why we get so few movies about these topics...

Great analysis. It really points to a core concept of character development: Showing, not telling.

Fuck the Facebook thing is so fucking true and it hit me hard this year as a 25 year old returning to uni (college) to study film. All the 'kids' these days don't have or use Facebook. They're all on Snapchat, insta or tiktok. For the first time beyond the funny "haha I'm old" moments this was something that is so culturally key to young people that I had no fucking clue about. None. Zip. That very conversation at the 3:20 mark is one I've had in the last couple of months.

There are two U.S dramas I liked last year which one of them was 8th Grade. Also, Thunder Road was incredibly raw and heartbreaking as well. You should check out if didn't watch until now. edit: I forgot the mention Blindspotting.

ā€œ...itā€™s going to be litā€. This film looks brilliant! Not my preferred subject matter but I may need to watch it just for the technical observations. Thanks! Iā€™m loving your channel. Iā€™m trying to learn storytelling to improve my own videos.

Wow absolutely love the videos, really help learning filmmaking in an indirect way! I was just wondering how you get the rights for the film scenes you show or if u even need them? I was thinking about making a video with scenes or screenshots in it..šŸ’ŖšŸ’ŖšŸ”„
