Whiplash is a 2014 American drama film written and directed by Damien Chazelle. It depicts the relationship between an ambitious jazz drumming student (Miles Teller) and an abusive instructor (J. K. Simmons).

Whiplash premiered in competition in the US Dramatic Category at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival on January 16, 2014, as the festival's opening film.[4] Sony Pictures Worldwide acquired the international distribution rights.[5] The film opened in limited release domestically in the United States and Canada on October 10, 2014, gradually expanding to over 500 screens and finally closing on March 26, 2015. The film grossed $49 million on a production budget of $3.3 million.

The film received widespread critical acclaim, with particular praise for Simmons's performance and Chazelle's screenplay. At the 87th Academy Awards, Whiplash won Best Film Editing (Tom Cross, ACE), Best Sound Mixing, and Best Supporting Actor for Simmons, and was also nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Picture.

I've just realized how scary editing is, in that it can make a film a masterpiece or a trash. Whew! This lesson is a gem. 👏👏👏👏👏💯

Almost none of this video is about how it was edited... mostly just about storytelling. Very interesting tho

Whiplash is an editing masterclass from start to finish. The Oscar was well deserved.

I imagine a scene when Fletcher goes "rushing or dragging?!" and neiman (or lets say another student in the future) goes "I was on my fucking TIME!!" and fletcher takes a step back and smiles

Not to be rude by any means, but isn't this more about the story rather than editing?

This episode was AWESOME!!! I'm currently in the works of making my first doc, and episodes like this that dissect good editing in detail, and especially in a more casual, vlog format, makes it super diggestable. More of this, please!!

Hey, I just wanted to say thanks! I found your channel last night because I've been on a struggle to find any sort of work (over a year) and I was just looking for ways to improve my mindset on editing and how to approach it. I originally saw the video "WHAT IT TAKES To Edit Big TV Shows" and that video got me to start BINGING ALL your videos lol. It's always interesting to hear people's story in this industry because it's almost always unique. Hearing how Josh was doing weddings, then became an AE, and made a breakthrough from being nice to a PA was just amazing. Your channel has given me some sort of hope hearing stories like Josh and the one you mention of Tom in this video. Thanks again for the content and keep doing your thing!

Another great video Sven. Loving the ‘coffee with editors’ concept. Would love to see more of these collaborations.

Love how you jumped the line in your own video when talking about about jumping the line ;) Kidding aside, your channel has become my favorite on moviemaking - well, my favorite with the late "Every Frame A Picture" channel. I've been a "videomaker" for 10 years now, and your podcast and videos gave me insights like no other on my work as an editor. It just make me want to edit stuff :) I'm glad you're finally tackling "Whiplash", which is the only movie I ever went to see three times in theatre, and is probably among my favorite of the last 20 years. Keep up the great work!

Is this a breakdown of the editing or the writing? I feel like we're discussing the layout of these scenes from a writer's perspective. No disrespect, I know it won an Oscar for editing and this is an editing channel, so I'm wondering why we're going through the choices the screenwriter made and not the specific cuts and why they are placed. Great movie and I'm genuinely interested.

The rising and falling tension is exactly how I felt watching this whole movie. I call it triggered anxiety. Lol

I loved this and really learned a lot even in this short video. This was my first video about editing. Thank you for such insightful comments. I really like the two-person format.

The cuts between this film and RB to demonstrate what Damien and Tom were after were extremely effective. Excellent work
