I used to be a Mike Portnoy hater, constantly making fun of his "signature" fill as repetitive and easy. But as I've matured as a person and musician myself, I've come to see why his drumming is so great. He's MUSICAL. He responds so well to the musicality of the other instruments. He searches for a groove that supports the song, and nails it every time. Truly a drumming great!

I can't believe it's been 13 years. DT was my favorite band as a teenager, and when he left I began moving away from it. Now that excitement for new Dream Theater is returning and I feel like a kid again. Truly a miracle this happened.

I had the honor of being backstage and meeting Mike after the conclusion of the Avenged Nightmare Tour in Orange County, Ca. I was standing next to Mike, having just met him, when Jimmy Sullivanâs parents walked up and introduced themselves to Mike. This is a direct quote from Jimmyâs Mom after Mike said that hoped he honored their sonâs memory with his performance: âIt was perfect.
