If you really pay close attention to the song, alt-J Is really just trying to say that relationships and love is all dependent on how desperate you are for love and compassion, and that when you let your mind get the best of you can pine and chase and lose your mind in desperation. The music video seems to say the same thing, it may not be about love but clearly, no matter how you look at it, the man shouting is losing himself in his desperation.

While, honestly, I don't entirely understand what happened, I LOVE that I was enthralled for 4 solid minutes of a single shot on one character. That doesn't happen in music videos. Ever. Good job, AltJ.

Did anyone else notice the woman at 2:45 ? Woman, dark skin, and head shaved but not bald - contrasting all the men in the crowd. She also stands closest to the man on the podium. Interestingly, she only appears right as the song goes, "unless I have a woman pushing me," when the man is finally pushed over the edge and commits suicide.

I listen to this song every time when I feel terrible and so sad inside. Listening on repeat until finally I will start to cry and feel a relief

I know I'm kinda late, but this masterpiece never gets old. I think that the men standing there are representing people. They look the same and throughout the whole video, they have the exact same expression. Also, the weather and scenery at the beginning of the video is gray and sad. The main character is a person, that has enough of the not-changing world. He is a lonely man and needs somebody to love. But he feels too old and nobody ever came to be a love for life. You can clearly see he is desperate and shouting for help. The men around him don't react, so this could be another meaning: the blindness of people. They stare at him shouting for help but don't react in any way. After he gives up, they just stare a little longer and continue their lives as nothing happened. Too much stress and routine can destroy a human and we don't see the signs that somebody needs help. We don't even know when we need it.
This is my interpretation, it's a masterpiece and it's amazing how everyone can see the same piece completely different

If anyone bothered to look up an interview and see what they said, youd see that its supposed to be one of those British Corner Speakers in the late seventies. They preached for their own reasons and beliefs, but no one cared to listen to them. So he committed suicide. "The hero does the most excessive act because he cant do anything else- shaking peoples minds in those dark times."
