I think the reason Bleach has always resonated with me, is because (At least in the first half of the show) it's not JUST about fighting, it's equally about WHY we chose to fight

Ichigo's worst enemy has always been himself. Ichigo is at his best when he doesn't fight himself.

[Tidbits & Clarification]
- Bingo! Ichigo has been losing faith in his own abilities, he's been relying on Zangetsu while feeling that he himself is inadequate, so his inner world is responding in kind. (As you said, he's capable at hand to hand combat yet doesn't display it here)
- Ichigo, is human, humans are complex and have many desires. We know he fights to protect but when you look back at his battles you see that he also seemed to enjoy fighting, but for some reason he seems to neglect that part of himself, and White doesn't like that, he believes it'll get Ichigo killed so he's stepping in.
- The King and the Horse speech is fascinating
You seemed to get it but just for complete clarification.
A horse is an animal that doesn't choose to fight, it's neutral, often dragged into battles, and used as a tool by the owner, the King. Ichigo has failed back to back which has him doubting himself, afraid to move forward, so at current he has a neutral mindset, he's not using his Instinct, a King decides and takes ownership of their actions.
(This is also cool because it refers to being the King of yourself; if you can't control what is inside of you, you can't be a proper person in society).

Instinct the will to succeed. A purpose and objective. As long as Ichigo approaches each battle with the purpose of that instinct to dominate and win not second guess or doubt the reason for clashing.

1:56 There are 2 filler Arcs in Bleach that are somewhat good. Many people seen them, many like them.
Probably no one would mind, if you reacted to them:
Zanpaktou Rebellion Arc (season 13, episodes 230 -265) and
Reigai Arc (season 15, episodes 317-342)
ofc, as times go by... thing is.. they are both placed kind of weird... Zanpaktou Rebellion, before a huge climax, a Reigai arc, just after it, and before Lost Agent Arc, which is something complately different.
