" I’m a professional actor, but I’m not a professional musician, so I wanted to do the whole thing really not professionally. So I spent all my own money to make the video and I had to rent the mermaid costume, which ended up being incredibly shitty, but in a way that I think is really funny. (Maya's interview with pitchfork)"
I love the whole on-a-low-budget feel the MV has. It reminds me of those early 2000s bands who had amazing music but had no record label who would release this self-made music videos. It adds to the nostalgia To Love a Boy already has, and it makes it feel more personal than it already is. I love this song way too much. So jealous, it looked like so much fun filming and i love all the involvement Maya and her friends had in this MV.

1:47 pulp fiction cover with her mother in it. If it's on purpose, loved it.

You can see Maya's personality shining through the whole video. She's bubbly, creative and can have a goofy sense of humour too! She explores the idea of naivity of love through her mermaid persona. She is left alone in the "real world" to explore and she is confused and curious and scared and amazed. the real world is loud and confusing. So by the end of the video she comes back to the beach and strips her mermaid persona and goes back to the ocean. I take it the city is a metaphor for love (or the idea we have of it 'cause it can be simple and messy, scary and thrilling), the mermaid is her naivity before falling in love which is why she goes back to the calm and peaceful ocean as a human and not a mermaid. She loves the ocean, she is more mature now yet she wants to recover her naivity. Aesthetically is far from perfect, but the concept is there and she delivers her message. It's a cute video imo, I liked it a lot ❤️ I love Maya, she's so talented and has such a lovely voice 😍
