Let Me Explain
The reason it appears this way to Lupe (aloof from personal tension) is because Drake generally has better command of simple literary devices that are often classified as āword play," meaning similes, metaphors, allusions, light entendres, and analogies. However, much more complex literary tactics like anaphora, allegory, symbolism, foreshadowing, and diction go under the radar of high-level lyricists (technicians) because theyāre utilized to advance themes and concepts as opposed to on-the-nose litany devices that are used for wit and entertainment. Thereās a correlation between how much energy is allocated towards theme and content (i.e., Nas, AndrĆ© 3000, and Kendrick) versus attempting to bend language for entertainment purposes (i.e., Eminem, MF DOOM, and Busta Rhymes). It is much more difficult to have a balanced approach or lean heavier on content and themes, which requires much more insight, creativity, and structural analysis. The more you focus on vocabulary and simple but clever literary devices or rhyme schemes, the less you have to contribute to the message and, in some cases, delivery. In short, Lupe looks at lyricism in a very simplistic way, and by that criteria, Drake would actually appear to be a better lyricist than Kendrick Lamar. I love both as artists, and I believe they have a myriad of strengths, but they are both different in various ways.

He listened to the response but not the diss from 'Like That'? š Come on, his bias is clear. That song is everywhere, he's heard it.
