It's all about muscle memory. You have to be able to play without thinking about it. I fronted a band for years while playing bass. Talk about difficult. Several times. I opened my mouth and hoped the right lyrics came out. Just don't pressure yourself, it will come.

I just started learning drums and so far the hardest part it limb independence. That's similar to what you're saying here, everything has to go at it's own time. I've wanted to play and sing together for so long! I hope these skills overlap

Getting the strumming hand to work with the fretting hand is hard enough, now try singing at the same time is near impossible, at least for me.

As a beginner after a few months of practicing for hours a day I had basic chords down but couldn't sing along with myself until I started tapping my foot and concentrating on my foot helped me to split my attentions between chord changes and singing. Concentrating on my foot helped a lot. Some songs are more difficult I've found. Some take me out of my comfort zone like Bush Machine Head. It seems to be out of sync with the singing so learning to Fly should be a good confidence builder and if you encounter some down the line that you still find it's hard to do both first be patient and then don't kick yourself if it doesn't come as naturally. Like your video Stich and your way sounds right. I didn't have a metronome when I started. Or a drum machine. Good video, I did see this 👍 and I'll give you one.

i like this and hear about the same thing when i ask someone else the same question how to sing and play at the same time. so currently i am working on improving guitar playing so it more natural and i dont have to think about what im doing on the guitar to sing. but thanks for the tips and help

Little tip that helped me tremendously when I first started Dont try to sing the lyrics right away. Just take your most confortable sound you can make and play it over the chords. Mmmmh, lip bubbles, aaaah, buuuh or whatever suits you the best. Once you can do that easily, start to add the lyrics

Thanks, Ian. For me it’s learning ALL the words. Dang, I screw up every time.

8th note strumming was for me. The easiest to sing to. My problem happend on syncopated strumming.. when the ghost strum took place, I lost the vocals instantly.

Cool lesson. I think the pre vocals lip-licking helped too?

Wonder now, if knowing the lyrics by heart (like you mentioned knowing chord structure) if this might help engage the nuralplasticity required for the chords muscle memory development???

Is there a reason why the 2nd finger was moved from 2nd fret of 4th string to 2nd fret of 4th string when going from C to Am?

Awesome video that appears to have been shot at 1313 Mockingbird lane. 😆

My biggiest issue is I "have" to play the song exactly the way it's written, which is why I make a better sideman to a singer.
