You got a fast car
I want a ticket to anywhere
Maybe we make a deal
Maybe together we can get somewhere
Any place is better
Starting from zero got nothing to lose
Maybe we'll make something
Me, myself, I got nothing to prove
You got a fast car
I got a plan to get us outta here
I been working at the convenience store
Managed to save just a little bit of money
Won't have to drive too far
Just 'cross the border and into the city
You and I can both get jobs
And finally see what it means to be living
See, my old man's got a problem
He live with the bottle, that's the way it is
He says his body's too old for working
His body's too young to look like his
My mama went off and left him
She wanted more from life than he could give
I said somebody's got to take care of him
So I quit school and that's what I did
You got a fast car
Is it fast enough so we can fly away?
We gotta make a decision
Leave tonight or live and die this way
So I remember when we were driving, driving in your car
Speed so fast it felt like I was drunk
City lights lay out before us
And your arm felt nice wrapped 'round my shoulder
And I-I had a feeling that I belonged
I-I had a feeling I could be someone, be someone, be someone
You got a fast car
We go cruising, entertain ourselves
You still ain't got a job
And I work in the market as a checkout girl
I know things will get better
You'll find work and I'll get promoted
We'll move out of the shelter
Buy a bigger house and live in the suburbs
So I remember when we were driving, driving in your car
Speed so fast it felt like I was drunk
City lights lay out before us
And your arm felt nice wrapped 'round my shoulder
And I-I had a feeling that I belonged
I-I had a feeling I could be someone, be someone, be someone
You got a fast car
I got a job that pays all our bills
You stay out drinking late at the bar
See more of your friends than you do of your kids
I'd always hoped for better
Thought maybe together you and me'd find it
I got no plans, I ain't going nowhere
Take your fast car and keep on driving
So I remember when we were driving, driving in your car
Speed so fast it felt like I was drunk
City lights lay out before us
And your arm felt nice wrapped 'round my shoulder
And I-I had a feeling that I belonged
I-I had a feeling I could be someone, be someone, be someone
You got a fast car
Is it fast enough so you can fly away?
You gotta make a decision
Leave tonight or live and die this way

All these decades, never knew the lyrics to this classic. Cried for chances not taken. Chances taken and missed. Very relevant in 2024.

This is the only song in history that cannot be covered. No matter how much talent and soul you have you can never give this song the credence it deserves.

I was in a bad spot in my early 20ā€™s my dad was an alcoholic , my mom lost her home so I was couch hopping. Until I met this man who I only dated for 3 months until we decided to just leave across the county with one suitcase. Weā€™re now in our own beautiful home with a beautiful baby boy. This song will always stick to me.

This song speaks to so much about the poverty, hopelessness and conditions that people all over the world are living. Timeless - the more things change, the more they stay the same. Both versions, the original and Lukeā€™s are great but canā€™t beat Chapmanā€™s - way more poignant. ā¤

This has got to be one of the most authentic songs ever penned! Tracy Chapman's voice is beautiful, clear, unaffected and timeless. AN ABSOLUTELY AMAZING SONG.

The line ā€œsomebody's got to take care of him, So I quit school and that's what I didā€ hits way too close to home

Born in a poor family in Brazil. Remember this song in the radio in for some reason this makes me cries as a childā€¦ i grown up. And had opportunity to learn English. And now I can understand the lyrics that made me cry while was young. Music is magical and it change lifes forever. I still canā€™t write properly but enough to understand how I was in the right way since my 3 years old

My daughter passed away last April from breast cancer. When she was young and this song came on we would turn up the radio and sing. While it makes me sad it also brings back wonderful memories.

I was in my forties when this came out. I'm 72 now and it still makes me cry. When I saw her I thought she had so much soul that went with her talentā¤

Moral of the story...get with someone who has a work ethic. A fast car just isn't enough. A good work ethic and a dependable car, that's the way to go.

I canā€™t listen to this song without sobbing. Every time. Hits so deep. I think every single person can relate to this someway, somehow. We gotta make a decision. Leave tonight or live and die this wayā€¦

This version of Fast Car is the G.O.A.T. I feel Luke Combs does a good job but I feel like he just sings lyrics. Tracy chapman tells a story. Raw f**king emotion.
