United States, Singer/Songwriter, Folk Rock ,Country Rock

"In 1969, John Phillips resigned with the Dunhill label by promising to reform The Mamas & The Papas for the occasion, while the project he intends to carry out, the bastard, is a solo album. For the record, it is with Dunhill's lawyers in the ass that the quartet will end up entering the studio to burn the dispensable People Like Us , in 71.
It is that Phillips is at the time a little bored of the great flower power circus and that he has a collection of lovingly composed titles to defend. Production outright summons James Burtonon the guitar. Elvis himself will freak out on "Mississippi", which he will resume. The collaboration between Phillips and the King will not go much further, Colonel Parker is not too keen on hippies ...

1969 is the twilight of the Baba Gods. Altamont took place, Neil Armstrong walked on the moon and the Viêt-Cong is not giving up, over there in the rice fields. A bit like in Pacific Ocean Blue , this disc takes note of the turning point. John Phillips, in texts where melancholy disputes him with lightness, paints, with well-shot vignettes, the small company he frequented at the time, between Bel Air and Malibu. Special mention to the beautiful Michelle, who goes a little through everyone's hands, on "Down the Beach".
The musical background is decidedly country-rock and folk and, in the genre, it is one of the most successful records of the time. If it is no longer the flamboyance of Mama's, Phillips proves, in a more introspective register, that he is decidedly a great songwriter , an inspired composer who wanders off towards gospel ("Captain (The Mermaid)") or the honky-tonk ("Let It Bleed, Genevieve").
The ten tracks on this album are so many little wonders that require repeated listening and I will say the same for the bonuses delivered on the reissue, not the filling for once."

His solo album is not "the album of the year" but it's very difficult.. not to say impossible to resist any song wrote by him. John Phillips one of the greatest of the Sixths 🌀

John Phillips The Wolfkng of LA. John's writing and voice, but what really makes this solo album pop is the line up. Most, if not all, were members of LA"s legendary Wrecking Crew They were Phil Spector"s Wall Of Sound at Gold Star Studios in Hollywood. First time hearing this album. It was pleasant listening to "Papa" John's folk music that easily crossed over into country rock (with the help of Wrecking Crew.) They were the best, the very best session players ever assembled. Thanks Babis.

Funny how people can perceive a piece of music so different. To me, this is one of his greatest works and a perfect example of his effortless ability to move into the country-tinged style which had recently been popularized by Sweetheart of The Rodeo. steel guitar, stripped down n laid back rhythm section & wistful lead vocal add to the feel of a solitary man, disillusioned by a broken marriage, a failing group, Altamont, hard drugs, the failed promise of peace & love in light of racial tensions, Vietnam and harder dope. Female gospel choir round out this classically American collection of tunes from the South Carolina songsmith. One of the better things I’ve heard which he’s done. It’s gotten me through an excruciating breakup on repeat listen, so I know it holds up without succumbing to the “getting sick of it” business. It can enhance the beauty also of an otherwise glorious day if you put it on whilst driving up into one of those Canyons the hippies were always carrying on about. Just try it and tell me I’m wrong when you’re chugging through Malibu Canyon and come around that bend and the sprawl of blue appears before you. I implore fair readers to disregard what the commentator had to say a few comments back about this being an unremarkable & derivative effort better executed by his peers in the year preceding this release. Why would someone dismiss such a gorgeous record? As if the stylistic decisions carried out in its conception negate the substance of the music, equating it to window dressing and an out of fashion musical trend... Perhaps this would be acceptable treatment of other lesser artists, but in the case of Phillips you have time traveling historic vigilantes taking cheap shots at easy targets who obviously can’t defend themselves for their poor decisions outside of the actual music. Any excuse to kick some dirt on someone’s work. In fact, this is a highly regarded album in the genre - demonstrating agile and concise playing, tasteful utilization of licks and phrasing which you wouldnt find on the album of some flash in the pan trendy. At the end of the day, this is Philips’ exquisite love-letter to good ole Lost Angel-ville. It stands proudly in between the golden sun-kissed odes riding the waves on Beach Boys “Holland,” Dennis Wilson’s “Pacific Ocean Blue” and the bittersweet glory of Neil Young’s “Zuma” or Love’s “Forever Changes” 🦀

Some fine songs on this album. Phillips was always self-conscious about his voice, at least in The Mamas and Papas days, but his voice and singing serve these songs perfectly.

Everyone talked about Cass and Denny having great voices, but John also had a great voice. (Proof from singing in the Journeymen)

DREAM, because of your collection, I know you're a guy who is all about rock-n-roll. Yep, you're a music man, so I mention this.... Today is Brian Jones" birthday. He would have been 79 yrs. old. The founder of the Rolling Stones. His stone stopped rolling in 1969. He's Rockin" and Rollin" and resting in peace.

Always liked John Phillips and it’s absolute delight to hear his solo work that’s more mature stuff than Mama’s & Papa’s which is in no way a bad thing it’s pop as pop is, this has more folksy, Americana touch which is great
