Buffy Sainte-Marie is back. The musical innovator's new record, Power in the Blood, is a sometimes fierce, sometimes lyrical collection — but her passion and sense of purpose is evident throughout. In a wide-ranging and energized conversation, Sainte-Marie joins Shad in studio q to discuss over 50 years of activism and envelope-pushing, the importance of play, and why indigenous artists are cracking the mainstream in unprecedented ways.

q is a magazine show that’s unpredictable in the best sense - proud to be “a wild mix of culture by way of Canada” as described by the New York Times. The Globe & Mail noted the show’s “raging popularity across a variety of platforms -- podcasts, television, websites, satellite radio, terrestrial radio, and occasional live remote broadcasts."

I first saw a 23 year old Buffy at the 1964 Mariposa Festival at Male Leaf Stdium.  The last time I saw her was about 5 years ago and, in her late sixties, she was still dancing and jumping off drum risers.  Now, at 74, she looks much the same as she did the first time I saw her and she speaks with the same passion as she did in 1964.

Buffy, you're a national treasure. Have been inspired by you since the 70's. My daughter's nickname is Buffy after you😘. We've all peed our pants at one time or another.... LMAO.

I am so respectful of Buffy to be living in Hawaii yet not involving herself with the native Hawaiian cause which, as a native "Hawaiian" myself, find their theme to be one I am ashamed of, based on factually incorrect history, ingratitude, and what I believe is totally foreign and in fact opposite of the cause of indigenous and aboriginal American indians. Buffy Sainte Marie is a genius and inspiration to the world!

"we educate each other all the time..." "...there are some great minds out in the streets...each unique..." I also love that Buffy says "Life is Precious, diverse and worth protecting". The Movement she mentioned "Idle No More" is new to more(to go discover). I'm glad that Marlon Brando and Muhammed Ali were helpful during earlier years. I didn't know Residential schools had electric (torture) chairs for indigenous children. I really love this woman & she's touring in Australia 2020. Many thanks.
