Call Your Boys - I can't stop listening to it. It makes me think of my father and it makes me cry. He's still alive and I'm a grown man, but the mere thought that my brother and I might have been disappointments to him brings me to tears every time. If your parents are still around, just remember that they won't be forever. We're all on limited time. Let them know that their efforts and sacrifices in raising you weren't in vain, but don't just do it in words, show them by making something of yourself. Show them by taking care of your family, being a loving father or mother. Show them that when they are gone, their lives as parents will have meant something. That's my goal in life, as important as any other career or other goal. :)

Something I appreciate most about iron and wines songs, particularly the old ones, is how beautiful they age with time. I usually don’t like watching artists perform old songs especially if they are performed differently but when Sam performs his songs they may change but they become more beautiful. The songs are sung by someone who has been changed by life and years. The beauty of the song makes me cry to think of how I’ve changed since I listened to these songs and how appropriate Sams performance is at conveying how things change over time. It’s so rare that music moves me in this way.

2 years ago I was working at Blue Bottle, and Sam Beam & Jesca Hoop came in and after their coffee I asked if I was doing a good job playing it cool about the fact they were there. Sam laughed and we small talked for a minute and he asked my coworker and I if we wanted to be on the list for their show at the Great American in SF. So, so rad, and Sam is such a great guy!

Please, remember me happily
By the rosebush laughing
With bruises on my chin, the time when
We counted every black car passing
Your house beneath the hill
And up until someone caught us in the kitchen
With maps, a mountain range, a piggy bank
A vision too removed to mention
[Verse 2]
But please, remember me fondly
I heard from someone you're still pretty
And then they went on to say
That the pearly gates
Had some eloquent graffiti
Like "We'll meet again" and "Fuck the man"
And "Tell my mother not to worry"
And angels with their great handshakes
Were always done in such a hurry
[Verse 3]
And please, remember me that Halloween
Making fools of all the neighbors
Our faces painted white
By midnight, we'd forgotten one another
And when the morning came I was ashamed
Only now it seems so silly
That season left the world and then returned
And now you're lit up by the city
[Verse 4]
So please, remember me mistakenly In the window of the tallest tower
Calling passers-by but much too high
To see the empty road at happy hour
Gleam and resonate, just like the gates
Around the holy kingdom
With words like "Lost and found" and "Don't look down"
And "Someone save temptation"
[Verse 5]
And please, remember me as in the dream
We had as rug-burned babies
Among the fallen trees and fast asleep
Beside the lions and the ladies
That called you what you like and even might
Give a gift for your behavior
A fleeting chance to see a trapeze
Swinger high as any savior
[Verse 6]
But please, remember me, my misery
And how it lost me all I wanted
Those dogs that love the rain and chasing trains
The colored birds above their running
In circles around the well and where it spells
On the wall behind St. Peter
So bright, on cinder gray, in spray paint
"Who the hell can see forever?"
[Verse 7]
And please, remember me seldomly In the car behind the carnival
My hand between your knees, you turned from me
And said, "The trapeze act was wonderful
But never meant to last", the clown that passed
Saw me just come up with anger
When it filled with circus dogs, the parking lot
Had an element of danger
[Verse 8]
So please, remember me finally
And all my uphill clawing
My dear, but if I make the pearly gates
I'll do my best to make a drawing
Of God and Lucifer, a boy and girl
An angel kissing on a sinner
A monkey and a man, a marching band
All around a frightened trapeze swinger

all the critics....
This is music, real music, which is lost in this day and age.
Sam makes music for the love, for the expression.
Appreciate that and his unbelievable talent to write and play so wonderfully.
who cares about acoustics when all of the above exists!
P.S. - Summer clouds is my new favourite Iron & Wines tune

Had the pleasure of meeting Sam Beam in Chicago. I worked at a design firm that was below a studio where he has recorded many songs. I went outside for my usual cigarette and he was sitting on the bench and I sat next to him. It blew my mind because I was (and still am) such a huge fan of his music. I did not however want to embarrass him or myself by coming off as star struck, so we said our hellos and a bit of small talk. I saw him a few days later and he shook my hand and asked how I was doing. As an aspiring musician writing in a similar genre, I was thoroughly delighted in our paths crossing. Part of me wishes I would have told him how much he inspires me, so until we meet again: Sam, Thank you for making such beautiful music. And thank you for being so kind. Phil
