As a qualified australian lawyer, our legal principles around adverse possession (squatting) are predicated on the presumption that āland is scarce and show be utilisedā.
Adverse possession exists because of capitalism and British precedent around land ownership. The law expects you to use the land or someone else should be entitled to use the land if you have āabandoned itā.

Australiaās housing market is extra messed up. Four of our biggest businesses are banks and they have a combined 1.4 trillion dollars in mortgage debt, so any attempt to deflate the housing bubble could tank the economy. They needed to be on this shit 20 years ago, but now all they can do is keep feeding the monster. I wish they would at least tax vacant houses, cap capital gains tax exemptions, phase out negative gearing, but the Labor party is filled with people who also have real estate investments and are convinced that negative gearing is a third rail after 2019.
