Francisco Goya was both one of the greatest artists of his age - and manic depressive. His work has much to teach us about how to handle our fragility and anxiety.

“The Spanish painter Francisco Goya is one of the outstanding artists of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Born into a middle-class family in 1746, in Fuendetodos in Aragon, he began painting young and was quickly recognised by his contemporaries for his genius. We acclaim him today for, among other works, his masterpieces, The Third of May 1808, his portrait of Charles IV and his family — as well as his series of unflinching prints, The Disasters of War.
However, his most emotionally compelling work is a print he made in 1799, titled — hauntingly and evocatively — The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters…”

As an artist, I strongly resonate with this video and the works of Goya. His art deeply inspires me. While I initially turned to art during challenging times, it has now seamlessly integrated into every emotional phase of my life. Art has truly become an integral part of my journey. This realization underscores the significance of art and artists in fostering empathy, healing, and connection. It reminds us why the exchange of artistic expressions is essential in nurturing compassion among individuals. I am genuinely grateful for the insights this educational video has provided.

My "night time monsters" used to be so bad that I'd drink myself to oblivion to avoid them. After I got sober, it was more of snacking at night to get the dopamine hit and flush away the "monsters speak." Nowadays, I make a conscious effort to stop eating at 6pm. Grapple with my inner harsh voices by reading a good book, or having some warm tea, or playing a electronical game of cribbage. The night monsters still linger, but the more I acknowledge them, and accept them for what they are, the easier it is to get through the night. 💜

I’ve heard that some of his work he made not to show it. Reminds me of “creativity without an audience” like you guys said on the video “Why you don’t have to be exceptional”. This man truly was... Cheers

Meditation practice can soon reveal that ''I am NOT my thoughts''. When I was younger, I felt the need to keep vigil with my thoughts until my mind was calm. Now I just cut off the lights, and turn my attention to my breath, in a state of forgiveness and compassion that soon extends beyond myself, to all beings. Then the sweet relief of sleep, will come!

As a Spaniard, this interpretation is a little bit open. Goya's massive printings were done as a political strategy to point out the imperfections he saw in Spanish society. This one is all around the idea of Spanish folks being far from thoughtful, for which the elite of the enlightened suffers

I admire these videos. They are well grounded, make sense and are unflinching. They give particular importance to the role of childhood in shaping our adult personalities for both good and ill. Calling a spade a spade, the videos emphasize the role of parents and parenting in the lives of children and do not retreat to what are often, but are not always, bogus biological theories of emotional disturbance that let parents off the hook.

May I suggest long evening walks to beat "night monsters". The mind succumbs as the body beckons it to deep sleep.

The only solution of this is to sleep early and wake up early. During night time our rational part of brain takes backseat and emotional part takes charge that's why we can be vulnerable to our negative thoughts but this is also the time when creative & crazy ideas can come, which rationality might hinder.
