Your parents had to have let you stay up till midnight Friday/Saturday August 1, 1981 to have ever seen this. This probably all seems totally quaint and archaic now but this collectively blew us ALL away back in the day :)
EDIT: Had to remove about 3.5 mins of this due to a claim by "April Wine"...I really tried to get them to understand that this was an historical archive, not an attempt to steal money from their band....They didn't want to hear it...All the other artist were totally ok with this but "April Wine" said FU. Go Figure : / EDIT: EDIT: Video was taken down again because Cliff Richard suddenly decided that I was ripping him off and shut down the video...I wrote back trying to get him to change his mind but no deal, had to chop Cliff out of the video for it to be posted again. Sorry everyone.

People who didn't live this era don't know what a cultural change it started. I lived in a small town in the southern US, everybody dressed the same, acted the same, listened to the same music. Within a few months kids were dressing like b-boys, goths, punks, metalheads...it opened our eyes to kids from places we'd never been and the possibility you might find people you fit in with out there in the big ol' world.

Back when life made sense. Back when America was one hell of a great place to grow up in.

MTV should offer a vintage channel where they just play this over and over - everything from the early days before realty TV ruined it.

I was 5 years old and my grandmother stayed up with me to watch the launch. She sent away for the free MTV buttons, too. She bought me so many cassette tapes, whenever I liked a song on MTV. I miss her a lot. I can't help but to think of her whenever I hear Journey, as they were her favorite band.

40 years ago in 1981, I was 22 and just graduated from college. Now I'm playing this video as a 62 year old man, who has to get up early tomorrow because I promised to take my grandkids to the beach.

There is nothing today like MTV was. Such an awesome time that I am glad to have experienced. The 80's owned..

It was pure genius for MTV to air this video first on the premiere of the channel. Genius in that it was a music video channel and the name of the song is ‘Video Killed The Radio Star’. 🤟

I was 10 years old when this aired. I skipped school to see it. I pretended to be sick, and my mom dropped me off at my aunt's house while she went to work. And I layed on the couch and watched MTV all day. It was awesome! And historic. That was MY Woodstock.

I was 16 years old and absolutely coming out of my skin with excitement when this premired...I watched it nonstop for around 18 hours straight and me and my friends were calling each other on the phone talking about the videos we had just watched...Life was so much easier back then, All we did was check the papers everyday to see if any concerts were coming to town....Now I am 57 years old and with a tear in my eyes watching this again I now know I lived through one of the greatest times in the history of man...Oh if I could only go back and do it all over again.

The best thing about the early years of MTV was it was compulsive viewing. Sure the current tune you were watching now is hot garbage. But you didn’t tear your eyes away from MTV because your favorite song might be the next video. It was the anticipation that kept you coming back for more.

I was there. My friends and I started early....like, the night before and all day. We were on Pacific Time. This was a big deal to us, because before this, we only had radio or staying up past SNL to watch the late night music shows. The first song they played, I def see where they saw the irony. And yet, now, at the age of 60, eons down the music road, I see yet another level of irony, via YouTube music, technology, etc. MTV sold out not long after this era began....but our musically fevered, creative, hungry imaginations ran with all of it. I'm grateful for it all, for all my life experiences. And grateful for YouTube-- Time Machine back to better days, fount of learning and knowledge. And in all honesty, the best damn waste of time on the internet. After all, if it makes you happy, it isn't a waste of time. ✌🏻❤️✨🎶🌻 Love you all, babies, rock on!!

Woah, I never would’ve guessed they had a Paul Di’Anno era Iron Maiden video play on the first broadcast.
