Hey everybody! Thanks for watching this video on, "Your Favorite Music Sucks (and other misconceptions)". Media literacy! Empathy! Emotional intelligence! Let's talk about it. I've been on this website, discussing music for like 5 years at this point. For some reason, I feel like there's a growing communication barrier amongst creators x their audience/s. Here's me trying to clear up a few things in that regard. Topics sort of include Drake, Eminem, Fantano, Tyler, Nicki, etc.

ā€œPeople growing up on social media with the world on their fingertips are easily boredā€ haunts me.

I feel this. People act like Anthony Fantano absolutely hates an album when he gives it a 6 or a 7 when objectively he doesn't even really dislike an album more than be likes it until a 4.

One day I just had to realize that there's 7 Billion people in this world, and social media made it accessible for folks who don't deserve an opinion to have one

Your fantano take was excellent. Sadly very few care about his insightful commentary and just care about the score. His critiques/praises have helped me find great new artists to enjoy

I think a big factor that causes people to spew out their initial opinion of an album/movie straight away is how fast the conversation moves onto the next thing, whatever it may be, in the age of the internet. Most people don't want to sit back and reflect on what they have just listened to/watched before sharing their opinion.

I believe that because music is so personal, and tied to so many things about a person, when someone critiques music that is personal to you it feels like they are critiquing you.

I think what really bothers me is when people get mad at someone for liking a song or albumā€¦ like, you donā€™t have to like it, just leave them alone and let them enjoy it lol. Music critics seemingly never do this, but fans definitely do.

We're also forgetting that some people don't understand that "iconic" doesn't mean "good" or "bad." An icon has no inherent qualities attached to it other than the opinion that something is memorable and can be perceived as representative of a person, era, project, or other idea. Just as Ubisoft perceived their Watch Dogs snapback as an "iconic" piece of video game apparel, I perceive Ubisoft as an "icon of corporatism sucking the lifeblood out of their intellectual property."

the other day I recommended a track to someone, they didnā€™t even get through the intro before they rejected it and said that itā€™s not their thing. it ainā€™t even that it wasnā€™t their thing that stung, just the fact that they didnā€™t take the time to listen to it at all.. I canā€™t form an opinion on something unless I get involved with it at least a little first, so I wonder how people can move so fast on platforms like tiktok. not everything need to be deep or intellectual or slow, but this constant barrage of nothing but short and fast, it melts my brain man thereā€™s no real point to any of this, just wanted to share my experience

The thing that confuses me is even if you think my favorite artist sucks...who tf cares? Music is subjective, what you like I might not and what I like you might not and it truly doesnā€™t matter. Itā€™s one thing when people say something like itā€™s objective when itā€™s not but this rarely happens.

I think that music plays such a uniquely important role in our lives that any critique of a song/artist can feel deeply personal for some. People build entire identities around this stuff.

I think the thing to remember is that online discourse is so toxic and riddled with people who only speak in hyperbole. You mentioned cinemasins on how they talk about media in a very black or white way that there was pioneered by them. They had such an influence on online discussion that people assume it is the norm or that is just what it is expected. Obviously that shouldn't apply to you but I think a lot of people are with the expectations that people are just going to give black or white opinions.

Thank you for making this video! I've realized for a long time that nuance has been lost today, it's always black or white. It's always the goat, trash, or mid. It's always "he's right!" or "she's wrong!" never "they're right in some parts but I don't agree with X and Y"

This was an interesting video. I donā€™t agree that media literacy is at an all time low, but rather that the internet has primed many people to look for red flags ā€œhiddenā€ in any and every statement. It seems like the same thing, but I think thereā€™s a fine line of difference. Overall it is interesting to hear from a content creator how difficult it can be to create content thatā€™s truthful to your experiences and have that be distorted to mean something else entirely. It must be incredibly frustrating.

If you look at the world with social media as your lens, you will think no one likes music in a way that seems like they are even enjoying it šŸ˜‚It's like they either hate everything or need to defend the things they love instead of just listening to whatever they like and just being content with that.

this is why iā€™m so frustrated with the internet and discourse broadly, thereā€™s sooo little nuance and the character limits are NOT HELPING

Really enjoyed hearing about how your content can be so easily twisted and misinterpreted in the minds of viewers. I think it's important to take an extra second to try and understand where others are coming from. Don't put words in other peoples mouths, and if you don't understand then ask for clarification!

Thanks for making this video, it really made me think about how I view media and peoples opinions on it, I've realized that I view many opinions as nearly objective fact, and I don't really analyze and enjoy media for myself, but because I want to have an opinion on it to express. I guess this is what can happen when chronically online since early childhood. Great Video.

Very well put. I donā€™t think Iā€™ve seen many other people talk about this issue, and those who have talked about it havenā€™t put it quite as well as you have. I think this is a very important issue with media and consumption of media in the internet age, where itā€™s mostly about what can get the biggest reaction in the least amount of time. Great job covering this

If you like something thatā€™s all that matters! Who cares if someone else is critical of it. Even if theyā€™re wrong (or even right) you can still listen to the music and enjoy it. No one has to validate you music tastes!
