Saying sapphos poems have something to do with the modern debate on gender is sort of a historical anachronism

I know her poetry was always about romance and sex and lesbianism. But I think that saying her work also had something to do with gender fluidity/gender identity is a bit of a stretch. Wasn’t most of her poetry just erotic odes to Aphrodite and her female lovers (who were probably some of her own students)?

"Sappho does not care who we love. It is still love". If only, people think the way she thinks, the world would be more colorful and beautiful.

i'm a lesbian studying ancient greek and history, and i can say that this is some BULLSHIT propaganda. "identity choice", "gender issues"? no. Sappho's poetry does not have the purpose of transcending gender as people from the anglo-saxon countries are obssessed to nowaday. Sappho's poetry does not play with our expectation of gender, for the sole fact that if ambiguity there is, it is only because every poem we have is incomplete. translating accurately is almost impossible, even more in english as this language erases the gender of words and adjectives from greek. Sappho's poetry purpose was beauty, and that. is. all. she was depicted as a very passionate and terrestrial being, thus explaining that the few pieces we still have left from her are about the torment of feelings, especially toward women. and her main goal was the musicality of her text as it was meant to be sung and accompanied with instruments. this video is a perfect exemple of intellectual masturbation to please wannabe intellectuals who are not able to step out of their political believes to analyze art. and i am not talking about how false and misinformative saying that homosexuality, especially lesbianism, was seen as normal during Antiquity

"I say it's whatever one loves" I've been wanting a Sappho related tattoo for a while and that line just hits really well for me. I'm gonna look into the line more and possibly get it as a future tattoo :) I really wish videos like this were shown to me in school,, to just be made aware of the message of "be who you are, you don't have to fit into a box handed to you" would've helped me a lot growing up.

no, we cannot "learn about gender fluidity/ blindness" from sappho's poem. that's you inserting your bias and making it seem like gender is an integral part of her poetry. it's not. her poetry is about sexuality, not gender. stop with the brainwashing.
