"How can so many people be so stupid"
Pareto's principle: 80% of the people making those remarks are 20% of the population.
From what I have seen, there are 3 general categories.
- People who want to self-insert
- People who want their avatar to resemble an idealized version of themself
- People who want to try something completely different

AB said they were getting rid of lootboxes in Overwatch 2, but they also said legendary crests are not lootboxes because you have to play the game to get your lootbox after buying the crest. So... yeah. If I had to make a guess, AB is going to have lootboxes in Overwatch 2 but there will be a similar gimmick where they say "well, it's not technically a lootbox so technically, we didn't lie.".

27:00 I used to play as a guy character in fantasy games, and I wanted him to be basically what I'd wish I'd be in that fantasy world. So I tried to make him as close to me as possible, but much more masculine, a full set of hair, no glasses. After I broke up with the last girlfriend I had, I've been mostly making a female character. I can confidently state that my choice of character creation represents and reflects on my desires or lack of something from IRL. I wouldn't be surprised if ASM is right that statistically speaking, most people make characters that represent their race, but I think the bottom line is that *people just make characters that they want*. What influences that, which they want in a character, it can be many different factors. It doesn't need to be based on appearance. It just so happens that maybe most people just don't have anything better or original to want from a fantasy character, so they "self-insert", instead of making an interesting character. So you see a lot of people make characters of the same race, appearance or whatever. I think asm is on the right track with what he's going for, but he's wrong in regards to the bigger picture.
