Learn how to play Start Me Up, as performed by The Rolling Stones released on their 1981 Tattoo You album. Arguably their best known song (think it's a fight between Satisfaction vs Start Me Up on that) and a great example of lots of great rhythm guitar interplay between Keith and Ronnie Wood's parts throughout the song. I personally think that Ronnie Wood's parts get overlooked and if they are not there I think you miss it, so we'll devote time to his parts as we go through this.

The lesson covers the three guitar parts you hear on the record, Keith's open G rhythm guitar, Ronnie's standard tuning parts that compliment what Keith is doing, and the overdubbed guitar leads that happen at 1:22 and at the outro. I'll walk through all of those parts. My hot take about the overdubbed guitar lead is that this is Keith and he is actually playing in Open F just for that overdub. Check out why I think that is the case. (I have evidence :-) )

I know Mick Taylor was a tough act to follow but I love what Ronnie brought to the table. Such a strong guitarist, amazing with the Faces.

I totally support the Open F theory. Keith likes to pile up guitars in different tunings and trying an Open F on an F song would be quite natural to him.

Thanks for breaking down Ronnie Woods parts too. You were so right when you said Ronnie just doesn’t get the recognition( love) that Keith does. The ancient art of “ Weaving” I think Keith calls it

Totally makes sense! Never thought of this and have heard the note ring there forever. Thank you! And you’re right Keith always bounced around with his open tuning’s especially in the early days he favored open D and of course open E for gimme shelter.
