For those who didn't know, this is a cover of a 1926 Georges Boulanger song. Georges Boulanger was a violinist and composed this piece. It was originally titled "Avant De Mourir" which translates to "Before Dying". In 1939, lyrics were added to it and a first vocal version was recorded by the Ink Spots which reached the number three spot that year. The song would be covered many, many times, but it would be the 1956 version by the Platters that would go on to become a number one hit on the Billboard Hot 100 charts, R&B Airplay charts and R&B Jukebox charts. This is the version Mariah's version is, for the most part, based on.

I think this is the least melismatic I've ever heard her in a song. She sings every line almost all in straight tone with those quick vibratos.
And that sudden note change towards the end is just phenomenal!
I think if Mariah were a new singer who released this today, she would still shoot to super stardom like she did with Vision of Love.

The way this sent me back to the days when the Daydream album was all I listened to for months, the sounds of Forever, Under the Stars, Looking In, and Free playing in my ears.. This is that era Mariah and I am obsessed... I wish this was longer.. The buttery lows, and the clear powerful belts... The sweet tone.. God I love this. What a way to end my day. 🙏🥺🥰😍
