André 3000 opens up to Rick Rubin in one of his most candid interviews ever during a 2019 visit to Shangri-La. He talks about the early days of OutKast, how he first found his voice, how his mental health diagnosis has been both a blessing a curse, why it’s so hard for him to write new material, and why he would rather perform at flea markets these days than sold-out arenas.

ABOUT BROKEN RECORD

i remember i saw 3k walking in the park w his clarinet. we were walking toward one another & i was gonna go up to him n do the whole fan thing but then i stopped myself bc something in me just wanted him to feel like a normal person just taking a walk thru the park... we exchanged head nods & that was more than enough for me. after hearing him talk about having social anxiety i’m glad i listened to my gut that day.

"when you are alone a lot.... you contemplate. When you have a lot of time to contemplate sometimes it's not good... and the brain loves to find problems and that's not good." I felt this line.

I went to middle school with A3K( Andre Benjamin) and EVERYTIME and I mean EVERYTIME I see or hear his name or voice I light up with pride over who he's become, we lost a lot of schoolmates due to drugs and violence, so I'm always happy to remember the journey that took us from then to now. I appreciate his success because his success felt personal to me..."Andre, I still remember you and your boys tried to jump me at school 😂🤣😂" I love you and pray for your continued success both professionally and personally.

I'd love to hear André make a jazz album of just instrumentals.

The fact that André 3000 has social anxiety and feels more comfortable alone is making me want to cry, I really have never thought that the people I listen to would be going through the same type of mental issues that I do. It just makes me want to listen to his music more.

I’ve listened to this podcast episode probably 5-7 times since it dropped. It gives me peace in a way. The best part is they are both very successful, but their tones, voices and stories tell they are just two guys making their way through life just like us.

It’s so sad to hear him talk about a lack of creativity and confidence when he’s quite literally one of the greatest rappers.

I saw 3 stacks while walking down the street in LA. He was on the phone so I didn't approach him, but when I looked towards him, he looked at me and gave me this nod like.. Yeahh bruhh its me. He was wearing some overalls.

How is Rick Rubin, a record producer, doing a better job at interviewing a celebrity(one of my top 3 rappers) than most trained media professionals? He asks the right questions, doesn't interrupt unless he has something of value to add to the conversation. Kudos to both these legends for giving us this masterpiece! Edit:i know its a little vain, but thank u all for the likes!

I'm going through a rabbit hole this week of André3000 after the new album release! Jesus I'm in love with this guy! haha So sincere and open. As an only child, I can relate a lot to his words. He's an Artist from head to toe.
