Rick Rubin talks to Tame Impala's Kevin Parker about his newest release, “The Slow Rush,” and his creative process. Kevin shares key influences on some Tame Impala songs and also plays Rick a demo for an unrealized song from his voice memos. Then, Kevin turns the tables on Rick, asking about his work on “Californication” and “Yeezus,” which yields sage advice on record making.

"If I consciously decide that I want to write a song, you can pretty much guarantee that it will be one of the shittiest songs I've ever written" <-- This so much

Kevin's mention of having difficulty finishing something in one sitting without getting up and doing something else, really hits deep with me. That is one of the things I've struggled with as a musician for so many years.

listening to Kevin talk about being a kid and talking about his influences and idols is funny to me as a 15 year old, he my idol. I got into making music alone because of him. my 3 friends and I started jamming as a band because of him. I can't really put in words the love and respect I have for this man. I wish he could see this comment himself because I think it would make him smile and realize how much of an influence and role model he is for young musicians like myself. much love Kevin.

Being honest, at the beggining it kinda sounds like Rick doesn´t know that much about Kevin, but during the whole conversation he gets more interested in Tame Impala´s recording and creative process so much that in the end Rick ends up inviting him to listen music together. Fucking cool, they are both gods of the music industry.

Kevin Parker has like 3 song to his dead father and Rubin ask him if his father still remember the song that Keving was looking for... that was a bad start, let’s listen the rest

Hearing them talking about 'Californication' just made me realize that the album artwork stylish and font, must have some influence on Kevin's album covers...

If Slow Rush doesn’t sweep every major music award I’ll be highly disappointed. This was a quarantine classic which is perfect for the state of mind we were all placed in unexpectedly. Kevin is the best of this generation. He’s on that Kanye ‘10-‘15 run... that Pharrell 2000 til infinity run, that Quincy Jones making Thriller at 50, young Axel Rose... when it’s said and done he may be the greatest ever

Rick's questions, and his interviewing technique, are a clinic. Another of Rick's many skills. Parker's song "Yes I'm Changing" was my intro to Tame Impala and it often fills me an insane optimism, the kind like you're flying high and tomorrow could be a long way down, but today there's hope swirling in the blue clear sky, and the view is to die for.

How messy he describes his process makes me feel so validated! But I agree that having better discipline is key tho

Hearing Kevin talking about how he thought he was going to make it by 16-17 lol makes me laugh. I’m 17 right now and when I first started music about 2 years I thought I’d be the biggest thing in the world by now. I’ve come very far but have so far to go. Really gives me comfort to know that I was the only one who thought that way. Everybody’s journey is different. Thanks Kevin hope to meet one day🙏🏾
