The ending scene really made an impression on me. If you hadn't really understood the criminal's character earlier, with that ending you do get it. No need for understanding even, you feel it. The acting was astounding.

This is an excellent film: a beautifully made crime mystery thriller. In Mifune and Nakada, Kurosawa had what Hitchcok usually lacked, two absolutely first class actors. I mean actors, not personalities like JImmy Stewart, who did not act. And this film is stunningly directed all the way through. The scene at the end, where Mifune meets the killer is perfection. And his performance is also first rate. You really feel the waste of a brilliant human being. A flawless genre piece.

I just noticed for the first time that the Japanese title of this film is "Heaven and Hell", not "High and Low" - although the English title is probably more appropriate.
