I think a standalone, free to play PvP Assassin's Creed game could do well. Would allow them to devote a team to a game with the PvP mode specifically at the forefront and the no cost of entry would allow for the opportunity of players who would otherwise be hesitant or uninterested in trying it to experience it for themselves, and in turn may result in more long time players who may eventually invest in cosmetics or the like.

Assassin's Creed Multiplayer is probably my first true gaming love, I made a youtube channel because of it, met my girlfriend and so many other great people because of it. In my opinion it died for a few reasons. A major reason in my opinion was they never stuck with one style and built on it, ACB completely different from ACR, AC3 an attempt to blend the 2 and AC4 was an attempt to build on AC3, however I can't say for 100% certainty but I think they put way to much focus on Gamelab which lead to a much less polished game overall.
ACB for a lot of the people I knew was the best of the games, I remember when ACR came out everyone I knew was so excited for, we all thought, all they need to do is remove some exploits , work on some coding and fixing the lag and it'd be perfect, we didn't even care if they added new modes, maps, characters. Instead they overhauled the game.
In an effort to reach more players they kept turning away from their base. Eventually that catches up to you. Not to mention, trying to do the next new thing every year hurts the attempt to make a game as clean, polished and lag free as possible. It was never perfect in that aspect (I did stunlock back in the day on ACB but I wouldn't have been up in arms over them taking out an obvious exploit) but constantly introducing new mechanics to the game, new abilities, new modes etc, makes a lot of sense why they couldn't fix them. Fix one and a new one pops up and so on and so on.
Loved the video, I still miss ACMP, haven't played in about 7 years but I still think about it.

Man I miss this multiplayer. Getting the Extreme Variety bonus was always a thrill in ACB. It was awesome just going from Rome to Vienna, Mt St Michel, the to Alambra. All the maps were cool and the premise was unique. I haven't been into the newer RPG AC games but I would definitely purchase if they brought this back.

Man I really miss playing ac multiplayer. It was one of my first mp experience apart from halo reach and was a blast and incredibly fun. I was pretty good at the game but yeah the learning curve can be very frustrating and unlocking the most useful abilities or even cosmetics takes a lot of time

Competitive multiplayer was super fun in my opinion. I played a lot of Brotherhood and ACIII and both games had excellent online modes. They had a few problems and sometimes parkour wasn't as good as it could be but in general they were really good. I love the idea of being a silent assassin who stalks their prey while also avoiding pursuers. One great mechanic that you didn't mention is that people on top of the score board would be hunted by multiple assassins. So as soon as you're the number 1 player, you can feel the heat and tension as half the lobby is trying to murder you. These moments were extremely fun because you had to be very cautious and mindful of your surroundings. Sometimes it only took a split of a second to spot your target or your pursuer. Other times you had to be smart and guess correctly which character is NPC and which one is the real player as everyone can blend in with the crowds, sit on benches and autowalk with other NPCs. The scoring system was also great. It rewarded finesse, variety and silent assassinations to discourage just running around and killing everyone in the open. You could always shoot someone if your target was an annoying runner who spends the whole game on the rooftops but the best kills were always the silent and deliberate ones. Walking up to your target completely anonymously, blending in with the crowd, focusing on them for a second and then using delayed poison so that they die not even knowing who and when exactly killed them was extremely satisfying.

The thing I loved most about AC's PVP mode is how it did something that not even the single-player could do: make Social Stealth actually work. In the singleplayer, social stealth wasn't really social stealth. It was regular line of sight based stealth only instead of bushes, there were crowds. It doesn't matter how you act in between hiding spots, you can run in between them or do other insconpicuos things and its fine. But in the PVP, you actually need to pretend to appear like an NPC since you could be assassinated by a target. You need to move carefully on the ground, and the rooftops tend to act like a bit of respite allowing you faster movement more safely. You had abilities to further mess with other players to make them think someone else were an NPC.
