Egyptian journalist and author Mona Eltahawy once referred to the global systems that control and endanger women as the world's "oldest form of occupation."

Ever since hearing her speak in Dublin, I wanted to explore that thought in a piece.

I wrote Swan Upon Leda in Ireland a year ago and recorded it recently with producer Jenn Decilveo. We were tracking it in studio when the news came through of Roe v. Wade being overturned. I felt there was an opportunity to offer some show of solidarity.

We're reminded again by the protests in Iran that progressivism is a global movement. the recent pushbacks against civil liberties and human rights respect no boundaries or borders, and like all acts of control, violence and indeed all forms of occupation, their legacies can be immeasurable in both the personal and political spheres.

Of all the songs coming from my 3rd album "Unreal Unearth", I wanted to offer this song at this time. I’ll be making a donation to Mayday, AidAccess, Plan C and Amnesty International, organizations working toward ensuring women and pregnant people can gain safe access to reproductive healthcare and civil rights. Lyrics:
A husband waits outside
A crying child pushes a child into the night
She was told he would come this time
Without leaving so much as a feather behind

To enact at last the perfect plan
One more sweet boy to be butchered by men

But gateway to the world
Was still outside the reach of him
Would never belong to angels
Had never belonged to men
The swan upon Leda
Empire upon Jerusalem

A grandmother smuggling meds
Past where the god child-soldier Setanta stood dead
Our graceful turner of heads
Weaves through the checkpoints like a needle and thread

Someone’s frightened boy waves her on
She offers a mother’s smile and soon she’s gone

The gateway to the world,
The gun in a trembling hand,
Where nature unmakes the boundary
The pillar of myth still stands,
The swan upon Leda
Occupier upon ancient land
But gateway to the world
Was still outside the reach of him
Would never belong to angels
Had never belonged to men

I discovered this song today, December 2023, AFTER seeing Hozier live on Paris. And I literally cannot stop crying. I don't know how could I have skipped such a heart wrenching masterpiece. The themes of the song more pressent than ever.

I gave birth this summer to a baby boy under a somewhat heartbreaking environment. I couldnt listen past the first verse because it reminded me of my trauma. I listened to the whole thing just now and I don't understand the entire lyrics. But this song is like a warm blanket of air on me, its the first to heal my wound with a soft touch, and in a moment I glimpsed into the future and saw what seems like the beginning of many healings.

Hello from Azerbaijan. Nobody is free until everyone is free. The furios gentleness of this piece undid me in the first verse, and that only grew more potent as it progressed. If we are to survive, we all need to work together. HOZIER THANKS FOR THIS BEAUTIFUL MUSIC

As much as I believe I understand this now, I know how I am. With all of Hozier’s music, it will be years until I can fully grasp the weight of this song. He is so powerful in that way, how we can truly think we know, only for our minds to be blown away once again in the years to come. I’ve loved him since I was young, and I’ll love him till I’m old. It isn’t so often we are given such talented, loving, and inspiring people. Hozier, if you ever see this, know your fans truly love you and the mark you have made on this world won’t fade away so easily. <3

Idk how else to describe it, this song sounds like being held by someone out in an open field in the spring, peacefully watching the rising sun turn the morning dew into fog; but yet also sounds like someone holding a mother back as a sorrowful scream rips through her lungs as her child is torn away from her arms. It's like the peace of finally believing and knowing for a fact that everything will be okay, but the tearful release of all the pain you've been holding in all this time.

In light of all that is happening today in the Middle East and for all the ages...my heart and my soul cries for freedom for all women and as a human being trying to be a "human" being of this world. Where is Human"Kind"?? Love is all we need!!

I appreciate Hozier for his deep lyrics, impeccable and otherworldly voice, and the ability to move the largest of men by combining the two.

Nut, the goddess of the sky and known as the protector of the earth in ancient Egyptian mythology , being incorporated in this song through the illustration makes this song even more heartbreaking...

I didn't like my name when I was a child. I never thought it could ever be in a song. And what a gorgeous one it is... Thank you, and bravo ! LĂ©da (with an accent, from a French overseas island)

The melody for the chorus always makes me cry and gives me goosebumps whilst the tune of the verse helps me regain composure. This song is like a rollercoaster for me. đŸ„ș

Wow. What a song. This are some of the best lyrics I've ever seen. Tying up timeless themes with the current situation of the world and adding irish and greek mythology to the poetry. Simply amazing

I am so in love with all of Andrew's work, he is the first person to help me see the beauty around me constantly. I don't have enough words to thank him for everything he has done for me.

This song feels like the blanket you wrap around yourself when you’re feeling shitty. It doesn’t fix the bad day, but it comforts you and holds you
