What brings me the most joy in my life is the relationships I have developed and sustained over the years, with the family I have known all my life, the friends I made 8-10 years ago, and my husband of the past 6 years. It’s true that acts of charity toward strangers and participating in group activism bring me joy; but creating gifts and positive experiences for the people I have confidence I will continue personally interacting with for years to come is truly sublime.

"What if we are asking the wrong question" wait lmao, The point of Kondo's method is exactly that though.... You're not supposed to stop with tidying your house, youre supposed to be cured of bringing those things into your home that don't spark joy because it then feels off to you to be a junk collector when everything in your home has a purpose, place, and is cherished and cared for by you (not forgotten in a closet or drawer somewhere so you just buy a new one when you need it). I love both this channel and Kondo, but I'm forced to ask....did y'all read her book? Or just watch her Netflix special where she helped Halfway-to-Hoarding Americans? Cuz you could have phrased it not as the WRONG question but as part of a plan with a next step that is much more important and many might have not connected with common sense though it was there --not hoarding trinkets in the junk drawer in the first place. These 2 things arent separate from Kondos method from how I read it. Anyways, much love and keep up the good work! I always watch your videos 💛💛💛

The research showing that buying stuff is not the route to happiness is right. The phrase "retail therapy" is a clue that those indulging in it are in fact feeding an addiction which, like all addictions, leads to unhappiness. Anybody who contemplates buying stuff in order to lift their mood, should think again because the high will shortly be followed by a deeper low than before.

Quite a few things make me happy, including what you mentioned in the video, giving and helping people. Helping out someone less privileged than me really puts a spring in my step. Another thing that makes me happy is being with friends and family. I was a part of a group discussion on if pop culture brings happiness or if it's just noise, and what I thought was while pop culture and stuff in general usually only creates short-lasting happiness like you described, it can also create a subject for discussion, like Pokemon or a favourite book, and these shared interests can help create friends, and give company, which also creates real joy.

Even more joy than buying: making. I‘ve found that if I want something and I make it I love it so much more. Even better when I made it using things I already owned or found for free.
