Im an Apache, Cherokee, and Mohawk son. The cultures of the vikings and the native americans are so different and yet so similar. Im captivated at the fact that hundreds of years ago our peoples once interacted and even had mutual respect for each other in most instances. Even today, I see comments all the time of natives and people of Norse descent praising each other and admiring each others cultures and how much we really have in common. I love this song and Im amazed at this rendition of it.

Fun fact. This was never a shanty, instead this was a poem. A child had taken his first life, killed someone for the first time, and he was in shock but his mother praised him. He then spoke this poem. Roughly this, though, as this version isn't a direct translation, adjusted slightly to work better as a song. But yeah, for those curious about the origin, that's the origin story!
Edit: It's from the Saga of Egil Skalagrimson, which is extra info I learned from the comments! Thank you everyone!
