The reviews must flow! And the spicy subject here is the first computer game adaptation of Dune, made by Cryo Interactive and Virgin Games in 1992. Take control of Arrakis as Paul Muad'Dib Atreides, reclaiming spice mines from the evil Harkonnens and forming a Fremen army to dominate the planet! Early 90s MS-DOS game goodness.

I played this when I was probably 4 or 5 years old and got freaked out when I accidentally walked into the desert and died, that cutscene scarred me lol

So, fun bit of trivia on regards to growing crops on Arrakis. If you have a sietch directly south of a Harkonnen stronghold and start growing crops (remember that vegetation always spreads North), you can make the Harkonnen just up and leave. They're only there to harvest Spice, and anywhere there's plants, there's no Spice. So you'll send troops to the stronghold, and the Harkonnens will have abandoned it.

LGR, thanks a LOT for including the link to the bandcamp download! of Dune Spice Opera 2024 remaster! Thank you also for understanding how Orni's DV's design are very close to the original Cryo's stuf...

In the house I grew up, the family computer was in my bedroom. I would be asleep late at night, and awaken to the sounds of my Mother playing this game on our old AST Windows 3.1 PC. The music was unmistakable, and still to this day, I remember it. But, I also had a fair number of nightmares because of the game, because of those freaky looking Harkonens, who absolutely terrified me as a small child. Still... it was always funny to know my mother was obsessed with beating the game, and spent hours playing it, just like I am now when I play more modern games.

6:45 "I'm your mother, Jessica." Thanks for reminding me, mother. Now if only my father could present himself...

Ecology was actually tactically interesting. Because the plants destroy spice reserves and always propagate north you can defeat the harkonens by starving them off resources. All you need to do is cultivate plants directly to the south of their settlements. It also makes your fremen more effective because they're all loyal to you once you start terraforming. I always used to use this method in the endgame as a kid. It changed the vibe of those last couple of hours of gameplay... but also I'll admit that 12 year old me liked roll playing as a teraforming hero who had more peaceful ways to shape the known universe.

"We're doing spice mining" If you ever played it, you just heard that in your head in the original voice.

I've played Dune 2000 so much that I forgot House Ordos isn't actually a thing in canon

I talked recently with Stephane Picq. According to IMDB there is a short easteregg in the new Dune movie. Gurney Hallek plays a short melody thats the Intro music to old Dune game. Stephane was unsure if its exactly HIS music, but I think its at least very close. Would be a nice reference by Villeuneuve

I remember my father handing me the novels when I got stuck playing the game when I was about ten. I loved everything about this game, but what stayed with me to this day is the music. And Chani's eyes...

Microsoft Flight Simulator added the Ornithopter as a free addon a couple weeks ago. Also includes some flight challenges on Arrakis. It's really fun to fly.

There have been a small and vocal number of us who have been championing Cryo's masterpiece over the decades. It did RTS before Dune 2. It's a real-time adventure game that's fully-voiced. It had an open world with a day/night cycle and recruitable companions. It was absolutely marvellous both from a technical and gameplay perspective. And it deviated from the original book AND the film of the same name!

I'm impressed the by the mouth animations while characters speak. Seemed to me like the Xbox 360 era is when games began expressing an ability to consistently do this.

My favourite part of this game is the demented voice acting. You'll meet a Fremen who'll scream in your ear "COULD HE BE THE ONE!?" And then whisper in sweet ASMR tones: "... The Voice from the Outer World..."

The story in this feels like a "what if house Atreides hadn't immediately been betrayed and could have proceeded with their original plans" kind of thing.

Had no idea about the OST remaster! One of my all-time favourite soundtracks. Stephane Picq is an outrageously good composer.
