The Sharenting Reckoning: How Things Are Changing for Family Influencers | Cosmopolitan

āš ļø Correction: 13:11 | Cosmopolitan misidentified the person speaking about legislation to protect child influencers. It is California State Senator Steve Padilla (D-San Diego).

Millennial and Gen Z content creators have built massive platformsā€”and fortunesā€”from splashing their childrenā€™s lives all over social media. In this mostly unregulated world of vlogs, TikTok, and sponcon, children are, for the most part, not entitled to a single cent they help earn. And despite allegations of exploitation and fears of AI and the Dark Web, the ā€œsharentingā€ world is still split over whatā€™s right and wrong.

Journalist Fortesa Latifi spoke with parent influencers on both sides of the issue: those who no longer make content featuring their kids and those who refuse to stop (and even a former nanny to an influencer family). And she digs deep into the murky world of influencer finances in this multi-billion dollar industry.

God. Hearing your daughter say sheā€™s uncomfortable with something, the solution is to give them more money. I get that the children said not to take it down, but as a parent you have a responsibility to make sure your children is comfortable. Regardless of what they say. Especially when she knows that YOU would want to keep the video up and that it would be making money for the family

Family vloggers are gross, these poor kids can't consent to have their whole life shared with (potentially) the whole world. Every silly mistake you make as a child, every emotional moment you've had, every health scare, puberty, bullying, relationships and so much more is exploited for attention and money. These kids will be terrified to ever express their emotions to their parents in fear of it becoming content. Their lives are scripted and rehearsed. They likely see a happy family performing for the camera then behind the scenes, there's neglect and manipulation/grooming. These kids will resent their parents and every childhood memory or they'll be so self absorbed that they won't even understand the concept of every action has a reaction, there are consequences to every decision you make.

Even child actors who's parents did everything "right" still had/have a hard time as adults. Social media is worse than Hollywood for "child actors"

Tbh what scares me today is thanks to AI people can take kidsā€™ faces and create CSEM or other fake videos pretending to be the parent without the real child or parent ever knowing. The potential for harm gets bigger and scarier as time goes on.

I'm so glad to see this being discussed on a large platform. I never really thought too much about it until i saw a British vlogging family sell a replica doll of their newborn baby, and now it's something i cannot stand to see. Seeing parents exploit their children's lives, their illnesses, their successes, their embarrassing moments, EVERYTHING, for their own financial gain is sickening.

So obvious that itā€™s the parents that want to be famous. The three here were clearly thrilled at being recognized in public, when Iā€™m sure itā€™s a terrifying experience for kids

The daughter was uncomfortable but she left it up and gave her the money? Yikes (even if the kid said keep it upā€¦still very yikes)

Ainā€™t no way they interviewed thismadmama like she isnā€™t physically, mentally, and medically neglectful of all her children.. sitting here stating that she knows how dangerous it is to put her kids online but continues to do so for a pay check/begging viewers to buy off wish lists. The cognitive dissonance is phenomenal.

People were warning not to do this. The very second Facebook took off it was being warned to be careful of what pictures you uploaded of your kids. Itā€™s disingenuous to go ā€œHow could this have happenedā€ when people were screaming warnings all steps of the way šŸ¤¦šŸ¾ā€ā™€ļø

I have so much respect for Grant and how he speaks. He has so many great points. Well done to all these parents who recognized the problem with putting their kids online. I do watch Toni and never saw a time she put her kids online. Which I'm glad of.

These people walked right into the point of why you shouldn't put your kids on the internet and they still didn't see it!!! These people are beyond disgusting. This is child endangerment and they are willingly putting their kids thrue this!! Their kids should be taken away from them and these so called parents should be in jail!!!

Finally more speaking out about the fame seeking parents. I hope one day those exploited children sue those that allowed this to happen

Iā€™m so happy Tori Phantom agreed to an interview, theyā€™re wonderful. They have a podcast with Gwenna Laithland called Childproof thatā€™s wonderful! Glad to see more attention coming to family vloggers.
