Lyle the Therapy Gecko started as a kind of accident. The pandemic hit, and like most of us, Lyle found himself in his mom’s basement, laid off from his job, and spending too much time online. After a few too many nights on Reddit’s streaming platform, Lyle put on a gecko costume and decided to stream himself. Suddenly, the views and calls started pouring in- and so did people's problems. Lyle found himself in a new predicament, alone in a basement acting as a therapist to the masses. In this Episode of My Life Online, we unmask the man behind the costume.

I worked with Lyle in college for a class we were in the same department. He was always doing out of the box things and is such a creative talent. He ran a comedy club at the university and this whole thing makes so much sense from him. I'm so happy to see the success he's garnered he's a stand up dude.

I feel like him being a gecko makes it feel less intimidating to talk to

I think its important what Lyle is doing. Some people don't have the means to speak to anyone professional or not, or are in a bad place and need to vent.

this guy seems so chill. i do hope he takes care of his mental health too tho. most therapists have a therapist themselves and it def. makes it easier to do this kind of stuff

Met Lyle IRL after a show and bought him a burger in Auckland. What an awesome guy. You could see the travel was starting to get to him, but so gracious with his fans. He stayed after the show and basically spoke to everyone who wanted to wait and meet him!

Just talking to someone with no judgment, or listening to someone else talk, is therapy. Don't let the professionals, as helpful as some can be, gatekeep what is in essence human support, understanding, and spreading those things! You deserve success just like anyone else Mr Gecko!

Can y'all imagine him as a grandpa and him telling his grandkids his experiences as a real life gecko that helped an untold amount of people?

I 100% can visualize him as a licensed psychotherapist even if he gets his degree later in life. When he’s in his 50’s or 60’s, I can just see it. Which means he really has a spot in the mental health field somewhere. I think we need to make talking about mental health a little bit less clinical and more open and this is a great doorway

Therapy Gecko is the best approach I've seen to modernized therapy, when most adults don't feel secure talking to people in a nice office with a solid career. He invokes the old feeling of the radio show "Love Line" in where the comedy is just as much of a help as talking about the issue. People, naturally, will talk when comfortable, which is the first step of addressing trauma and mental disorders. Lyle is amazing, he makes people open up and talk, which is really what all of us need.. someone that listens and feels excited when we talk.

Humans like this are the unseen positive force keeping society mentally well. A common theme is that these people never realise how profound an effect they are having on the world. Much love to him for what he does x

Lyle is fr one of the coolest people on the internet. Listen to one episode and you’ll get it…Geck is one of us. Sometimes hes happy. Somtimes hes sad and tries to hide it. Sometimes he’s understanding. Sometimes hes not having it and tries to hide it. He is HUMAN… the most human lizard Ive ever met. God bless this man and whats hes done for all of us.
