Once again, we set our compasses for the wild uplands of Mid-Wales. Where the dragons soar above oak and pine forests, and the mysterious druids weave their Celtic spells in far-remote valleys of green.

(in actual fact, the closest thing to dragons are the magnificent Red Kites that soar overhead; and the nearest thing to druids are probably Loud Bob and Owen-the-Hat, who roam the streets of Llandrindod with a pocket full of mushrooms. And we ain't talking about the shiitake kind here...)

Wales is very close to our hearts and we visit often. Here is true wilderness and solitude, and yet only ten miles from the nearest takeaway. However, when you are in such incredible countryside with no phone signal, the nearest takeaway might as well be on the moon.

These mountains may not have the purple-headed thrust of the Alps or the Rockies; they may be small and green, but they are much more ancient. The landscape is delicate and beautiful, full of endearing rivers and forests, and the distinctive white cottages. This conjures up the feeling that the Welsh call "Hiraeth", a sense of longing, nostalgia, and yearning for a life that has been lost. Here, in the Cambrian mountains, is the missing bit of soul you have been looking for.
