Visiting France's "Most Dangerous City"...

We booked tickets to Marseille only to discover afterwards it's poor reputation for crime and safety. This made us incredibly nervous and the more we researched the more bad we found. After hours of research, I was nearly dreading our trip, but like anywhere we go, we wanted to give Marseille a chance and treat it with caution.

We left Marseille feeling fulfilled, inspired, and sad to go so soon. Going in with such low expectations left us feeling quite appreciative of everything there is to see. The city is old with modern and impressively progressive features and overall the city is a multicultural hub. To us, the city was flowing with art, creativity, and music. People were fashionably dressed, expressive, and incredibly kind to us (even though we don’t speak a word of French).

It’s always important for us to go into places with an open mind, ready to form our own opinions apart from those on the internet. Like any city Marseille has its bad areas, but we are so grateful these didn’t deter us from experiencing everything she has to offer.

Howdy! We're Jenna & Andrew and we create travel vlogs. With this channel we hope to do more than just the typical bucket list. We set out to better understand the culture, language, and most importantly the people of the places we travel to. Our channel is designed to give a unique perspective and knowledge of each country, and our honest and true experience.

If you're American and from Philly, Detroit, L.A. or Miami. You won't have issues to adapt in Marseille.

Odd title when I visited in 2007 everyone was very polite and friendly. Almost everyone spoke some English if not fluent in English. The old city was beautiful, and the newer side of the city was extremely charming. Next time I go back to Europe I will definitely be visiting Marseille. I also visited during Carnival, which is their summer celebration, and supposedly the most dangerous time to visit. Marseille reminds me of my hometown of San Antonio Texas.

I visited Marseille in 2017 and I loved it! I didn't feel unsafe at any point I was there; I would highly recommend visiting, it's beautiful and the museum of the history of Marseille is incredible.

The only concept I had of Marseille was from Count of Monte Cristo, of which I’m a massive fan. To no surprise the city had changed this then but I LOVED it! It helps that I had zero clue about its shady reputation. Best parts were riding scooters through Le Painer, eating dinner at the Old Port, and cliff jumping near Calanque. Calanque happened to be closed that day bc of forest fires or something like that so we made the most of the trek we made out and just jumped in and swam around right across from Il Maire. It was beautiful!

Nice blog . Me too I wasn’t sure for Marseille because didn’t know about it being safe or not but definitely going now. I’m a French Canadian so language won’t be an issue except for the accent 😅

Crimes figures in Marseille are mainly about the gang fights in the external neighborhoods (witch is still terrific ). Out of the station, tourist are not THAT much a target , I mean not a lot more than any big city. Medias and tv sell a lot about the unsafety and unsecurity in Marseille

For a student considering a semester abroad hosted by Universitie Provence Aix / Marseille, does anyone please know if the school is any good? Is Aix nicer and / or safer than the Marseille campus which is apparently in the 3rd arrondissement? And is Aix or Marseille notorious for drugs whether used or pushed upon the community of students?
