If anyone sees this comment who was wondering, âsidechain compressionâ is when one element of a song is lowered, or âduckedâ, when another elementâs waveform is detected.
Itâs most commonly used on a more bass-y track when a kick drum plays because it both enhances the kick drum without having to increase its volume, but more importantly it âmakes spaceâ for it.
A lot of modern music mixing uses this technique to get that really crisp and clear sound, and not just for the bass-y âlow endâ. Any instruments sitting in any similar frequency ranges to each other (low, low-mid, high-mid, high) will have sidechain compression going on with other tracks inhabiting those same ranges. This, when used properly, makes things sound less muddy, because room in the audio spectrum is being made for the sounds to coexist. If used properly, this also lets a song sound louder without having to actually crank up the volume on any of the songâs tracks.
Generally it is used in a more subtle manner, because you want the effect to be more transparent, AKA the effect is doing what it does without calling attention to itself.
