LYRICS

First thing that you’ll notice is some separation from each other
Yes it’s a lie we’ve been believing since time immemorial
There was an apple there was a snake there was division
There was a split there was a conflict in the fabric of life

One became two and then everyone was out for themselves
Everyone was pitted against each other conflict ruled the realm
All our devotions and temperaments are pulled from different wells
We seem to easily forget we are made of the same cells

To my boy all that energy so vital
Love your hues and your blues in equal measure
Your comings and your goings away
My mission is to keep the light in your eyes ablaze

Second thing you’ll notice is that often we think that there’s not enough
It might feel dark it might feel lonely and you wonder why you’re here
You may be overcome with darkness and a sense of hopelessness
But it won’t matter if you keep the cord connected to the oneness

To my girl oh your innocence and fire
When you reach out I am here hell or high water
this nest is never going away
My mission is to keep the light in your eyes ablaze

And this cord is unbreakable
This pilot light is there in your pocket
And this bond beyond unshakeable
Even if we all forget, all at the same time
If we forget at the same time

To my boy my precious gentle warrior
To your sweetness
And your strength and exploring
May this bond stay with you through all your days
My mission is to keep the light in your eyes ablaze

To my girl oh your innocence and fire
When you reach out I am here hell or high water
this nest is never going away
My mission is to keep the light in your eyes ablaze

To my boy
first thing that you’ll notice is that everything is temporary

To my girl
next thing you might notice is that we will always be a family

to my boy
My mission is to keep the light in your eyes ablaze

She has the spiritual perspective that our new generation has lost.

Much of what Alanis sings about -- feelings, fears, pain, love, sadness, anger, hope -- are things that most of us have experienced or felt or suffered through. This is why we love her.

The fact that this is about her children makes it that much more special.

As an estranged child of trauma, this song hits different. Thank you for raising me through your music Alanis. You've been right about everything. ❤

I was 24 when Jagged Little Pill came out. As I stand on the cusp of 50, how does she still sound so good? How are her lyrics so profoundly great? Alanis is a rare treasure and we are lucky to have her.

MY father died this week and I heard song this morning and I knew he was speaking to us through your words. Thank you for that. Thank you for being a channel for his words.

That melodic hook at "Your comings and your goings-away ..." just kills me.

tears, tears and more tears watching and listening to Alanis and her beautiful daughter ... I sent the video to two mothers important to me, who are grieving the loss of their beautiful boys in their 20s ... this song is a song of joy and the love & connection of parents to their life's treasures - greatest gifts ... and I didn't realise almost 30 years later, that I share Alanis' birthday ...

The Queen is back. I had a big crush on her in the 90s and it just went back instantly with this new album! Like if you had a crush on her too!

This truly a beautiful son. I have two boys and a girl and relate to this son intensely. My babies are grown with their own babies now and I still want to keep them all ablaze.

I have been watching Alanis since "You can't do that on television" . Her growth is amazing! She has always had an empathetic way with her listeners! Motherhood, a world gone nuts in a pandemic! She is speaking to the eveyman telling them to seek hope in the darkest of time! She is an amazing artist. She has grown so much! This new album is a treat!
