LYRICS

First thing that you’ll notice is some separation from each other
Yes it’s a lie we’ve been believing since time immemorial
There was an apple there was a snake there was division
There was a split there was a conflict in the fabric of life

One became two and then everyone was out for themselves
Everyone was pitted against each other conflict ruled the realm
All our devotions and temperaments are pulled from different wells
We seem to easily forget we are made of the same cells

To my boy all that energy so vital
Love your hues and your blues in equal measure
Your comings and your goings away
My mission is to keep the light in your eyes ablaze

Second thing you’ll notice is that often we think that there’s not enough
It might feel dark it might feel lonely and you wonder why you’re here
You may be overcome with darkness and a sense of hopelessness
But it won’t matter if you keep the cord connected to the oneness

To my girl oh your innocence and fire
When you reach out I am here hell or high water
this nest is never going away
My mission is to keep the light in your eyes ablaze

And this cord is unbreakable
This pilot light is there in your pocket
And this bond beyond unshakeable
Even if we all forget, all at the same time
If we forget at the same time

To my boy my precious gentle warrior
To your sweetness
And your strength and exploring
May this bond stay with you through all your days
My mission is to keep the light in your eyes ablaze

To my girl oh your innocence and fire
When you reach out I am here hell or high water
this nest is never going away
My mission is to keep the light in your eyes ablaze

To my boy
first thing that you’ll notice is that everything is temporary

To my girl
next thing you might notice is that we will always be a family

to my boy
My mission is to keep the light in your eyes ablaze

Rolling Stone said she's not edgy anymore, those who walk that edge implode. It's called growth, and expansion on ones journey in life. So screw you Rolling Stone, you didn't grow~ beautiful song.

In my 20s, Alanis sang what I needed to hear. She's still doing it in my 40s... I'm forever a fan

This is the angry young woman singing you oughta know. You can tell all that fire is still inside her but shining instead of burning.

Alanis, thank you for this gift. Ablaze was the last thing my mother and I shared together prior to her death in NOV 2020. Ours was a strained relationship for many years and my mother saw the Tonight Show performance, prompting her to mention it in one of our rare conversations (she had grown very ill in her final years and 1000 miles separated us, plus COVID). I had just purchased the brilliant "Such Pretty Forks..." album and our mutual fondness for the poignant lyrics that capture the unique bond between mother and child drew us closer than we had been for too long. In the conversations, prompted by the poetry of this song, she shared for the first time in too many years that she loved me, and I shared the same with her. A few months later I visited in person and we shared what turned out to be her final meal together; she died a few days later. Thank you Alanis for the gift of this song, a treasure which was the catalyst to reunite mother and child-the perfect tribute to a perfect so. God bless you and your beautiful family!

How is she not edgy anymore? She’s still singing about real life — authenticity. Nobody writes like this anymore.

Uh, welp, to Rolling Stone and other commentators, I think she's edgy AF. Now more than ever, actually. Who else has the guts to show the mess and complication of being a parent while also trying to stay a person? Who else is willing to put aside their ego and show that level of vulnerability and not matching some manufactured "ideal" of what a (female) performer is supposed to be? This is absolutely next level. Alanis is and always has been incredibly raw, truthful, authentic, and present, and that's what we show up for. ❤

Imagine a world where every child grew up with this as their mother and/or father's mantra...thank you Alanis for nurturing these young souls, great song!

“My mission is to keep the light in your eyes ablaze.” Thank you so much for that reminder. I didn’t realize how much I needed it until I heard it. I have two young kids at home, and often I get confused thinking that “My mission is to keep this house tidy”, or “My mission is to get dinner ready on time”, or “My mission is to make sure you finish your homework”. So, thanks for reminding me to refocus my microscope. ;)

She has taken me from an angry teen to being the “Cool Auntie” that loves her 4 nieces and 1 nephew to the sun and back with just that mission; “to help keep the light in their eyes ablaze.” Thank you, Alanis

As a massive fan of Alanis since Jagged came out when I was 12 years old, and all due respect to her husband and family, to have her as a wife would just be awesome. Her husband must daily feel so blessed to be with someone so amazing and creative. He absolutely must be her biggest fan. You ough you ough you ough oughta know. What a worldwide legend.
