Effigy – Poison and the City is Udo Flohr’s first feature, which he also co-produces. It’s the true story of Gesche Gottfried, one of the first female serial killers ever identified, who murdered 15 people with rat poison between 1813 and 1827. She was found guilty of killing her parents, her three children, her twin brother, three husbands, and some friends and neighbors. Another 20 victims were lucky enough to survive. In 1831, Gottfried was executed for her crimes at age 46.

Effigy was shot in Germany and is scheduled for theatrical release in 2019. Thomas Kist, N.S.C. handled the cinematography. The screenplay was written by Peer Meter (based on his own stage play and on original court records), Udo Flohr, and Antonia Roeller. Set design by Christina v. Ahlefeldt-Laurvig and Knut Splett-Henning.

Effigy stars Suzan Anbeh, Elisa Thiemann in her first lead role, Christoph Gottschalch, Roland Jankowsky, Uwe Bohm, Marc Ottiker, Marita Marschall, Tom Keidel, Eugen Krössner, Christian Intorp, and many others.

I take it as a testament to my learning of the process that I could see some of the techniques. It would be nifty to discuss some of the choices and why they were made here and there.

Amazing episode Sven. These in depth discussions are super informative, all about the less talked about bits of the filmmaking process. This is so inspiring and I'm pumped up right now.

Fascinating. thank you very much - and good luck with the film. BTW, I'm 100% with you on multi-cam. Those constant continuity glitches with single cameras drive me nuts.

I totally agree about the use of Multicam and I'm a big fan of that. Every time I can, I shoot multicam for my projects.

Thank you for showing FCPX in action. With Frame.io and how Final Cut's multi-cam is one of the best ways of working out there.

Love your video and discussion as always! I was hoping to hear more on the process of how to be an editor that has a lot of distance away from were the film was shot. For example - how were files given to the editor and are there more editors today that are not living in major film cities

I think about this video sometimes, and I thought about it a lot before making my first feature, which wrapped filming recently. I really tried to tell people that it was happening even though there were many pieces that hadn't fallen into place, and I believe it worked! I really try to be the filmmaker that bites the lemon. I just shot my first feature which I'm about to edit, and I really also didn't do any shorts or anything before, because I just don't have any ideas for short that I can feel passionate enough about to make happen. I also think about Thomas Kist sometimes, because of this video. I had never heard of him before, but I'm more than willing to subscribe to his use of multi camera! There was a point at the shoot where I really wished we had been able to use it, because when we went into reaction shots I got an amazing performance from one of the actors that had the other actor respond with a better performance than in all the other shots and we weren't able to get that again! So his best performance in the scene is when he's not on screen and it's such a shame. Thank you again for sharing these videos, they're a huge inspiration to my own filmmaking, always!

Oh writing stuff down. I agree takes valuable time away from getting to the end goal. I would record the notes on my mobile phone file as separate audio files.
