The actual reason is You don't have pain receptors in your eyes. So you don't know when you've looked too long and are now doing major damage and burning your rods and cones blind. If you had pain receptors, you'd know when to stop because it hurts too much. Staring at the sun is like putting your hand on a stove burner but your hand is numb so you don't feel it destroying your hand.

I live in Bellefontaine Ohio where there was totality. It was so surreal. The temperature dropped immediately, and it got dark as if it were dusk, but it was 3:10pm. As the moon was going over the sun, it was as if a lamp was shining on you from the sky. Wild stuff

It peaked 95% here. Without totality it didn’t really get as dark as I thought it would. The tree shadows were freaky though. They shimmered with a wavy pattern from the lensing effect.

got pitch dark here in southern Indiana but didn’t last more than a couple of minutes, partial darkness lasted a bit longer. my spouse said the animals outside were definitely reacting to it. the weather channel had Jim at the speedway in Indy for it.
