The title is a reference to Flann O'Brien (a major player in twentieth-century Irish literature, fitting for Hozier) - specifically, a fictional character of his, de Selby. Though the character itself isn't referred to in the song, the themes it draws on are clear references to elements of de Selby's theories as well.
To quote Irish Philosophy, "de Selbyās possibly most interesting theory was that human existence is āa succession of static experiences each infinitely briefā (unattributed quote, TTP.4). From this he determined that any progression in life was impossible and insisted that time as commonly understood was not real. This is exemplified in his aphorism, āa journey is a hallucinationā (quote attributed to Country Album, TTP.4). A trip from A to B is, per de Selby, in fact a series of infinitesimal pauses. Thus at no point is the ātravellerā in motion."
The concepts of motion discussed in the song, of the irrelevancy of time and the paucity of knowledge, speak to its titular man's thoughts. Glad to see another Hozier song drawing on heavy literary elements.

when the drums roll in at 1:10 and the flashing lights from the lightning almost in sync with the drum beats, my jaw dropped.

today like 3 hours ago I saw Hozier play Alexandra Palace in London. I have never heard someone sound so flawless play live it was the best concert I have EVER been to. It was dark, electric, sexy, stunning in every sense and it was incredible seeing this man live for the first time after years of listening to him daily. He sang the tour version of this today and explained its meaning. He never misses with his literary genius and poeticism.

Lyrics:
What youre given
What you live in
Darling it finds a way to live in you
And your heart love
Has such darkness
I feel it in the corners of the room
(If i was any closer
I could only lose me
If i fade away
Let me fade away)
After the gloom
I wanna lose me (baaaaa)
I wanna fade away with you
If i was any closer
I could be lost
No more than i was or than i
Want to be when you fall on me like night
Every time
And i want to be so far from sight and mind
I wanna kill the light
I wanna run against the world thats turning
Id move so fast that id outpace the dawn
I wanna be gone
I wanna run so far id beat the morning
Before the dawn has come
Id block the sun if
You want it done
Let all time slow
Let all light go
I dont need to know where we begin and end
Id still know you
Not being shown you
I only need the working of my hands
(If i was any closer
I could only lose me
If i fade away
Let me fade away)
Do you understand
I wanna lose me
I wanna fade away with you
If i was any closer
I could be lost
No more than i was or than i
Want to be when you fall on me like night
I wanna kill the lights
I wanna run against the world thats turning
Id move so fast that id outpace the dawn
I wanna be gone
I wanna run so far id beat the morning
Before the dawn has come
Id block the sun
If you want it done
If i was any closer
I could only lose me
If i fade away
Let me fade away
I wanna run against the world thats turning
Id move so fast that id outpace the dawn
I wanna be gone
I wanna run so far id beat the morning
Before the dawn has come
Id block the sun
If you want it done

It must be said, that these songs, when they come, they come at the right moment to heal, awake, soothe, rip and tear. This morning I wrote that I feel like there is nothing to make me loosen the burden, of everydaytoday responsibilities, with body swollen with unwanting unmoving unfeeing. Then this song came, unexpected, unlike the other few, and this song just happened to be exactly the answer to my prayer, perfect alignment with loneliness and tiredness to make my body want to move, to fight the night and the weakness within. How dare he do this, and so repeatedly, so ethereal. Thank you from the depth of my nonexistent instant passing. Ching

He performed this in Amsterdam last week and let me tell you, when he sang "I wanna kill the lights" all the lights went down and then like 15 different lights went on chaotically... Truly an outer body experience, so glad I was there
