i-D Meets Filipino-born, London-based musician @Beabadoobee who tells us about her struggles growing up as a Southeast Asian girl in West London, how maturity helped her appreciate her roots, and her ‘lunchbox moment’ back in her school days.

The 22-year-old ultra-indie-pop singer-songwriter shares her childhood memories whilst giving us a bedroom tour, revealing her extensive collection of fan-gifted stuffed toys and angsty teenage diary entries.

At lunch, Bea orders a spread of classic Filipino staples including chicken wings, pancit canton, kubo fried rice, chicken adobo, and a triple threat dessert consisting of leche flan, turon and ube biko – as she discusses her obsession with chicken wings and her love for shrooms and weed edibles.

Back home, Beabadoobee talks about music as her form of therapy, unveiling that her latest album Beatopia came from a deep emotional awakening that she believes had been buried for a very long time.

I’m a first generation US immigrant born in the Philippines, moved to the US when I was 3. I grew up during the 90s and early 2000s, and the struggles of growing up Filipino in a predominantly white culture of course existed then as it does today. Knowing Bea was able to break those barriers through music is inspiring for me who is in my mid 30s, and I hope that inspires future generations to do the same.

As a black guy, I honestly can relate to a lot of what she’s saying about the struggles of growing up in a predominantly white area (I also grew up in London) as a non-white person and how important it is and good it feels to connect to and understand your culture.

Lmao her talking about the Pinoy parents packing lunch into a thermos lol I FELT THAT on a spiritual level 😂...As a fellow Filipina myself I remember my mum would always pack me and my older sister last night's dinner into little Tupperware containers complete with little cutlery to match. But we always ate up all that rice and adobo, or whatever Filipino dish mum made hahaha 😂
