In this video, I'm gonna talk about Yoram Hazoney's fascinating PragerU video, "What Was The Enlightenment." Who knows maybe this one will slap.

Footnote: So, broadly speaking, historians just donā€™t really talk like this, give credits or attaboys to various historical moments. They donā€™t pretend that eras of human history exist in isolation, uninfluenced by anything else, and if you said in a historical setting ā€œno progress occured before the enlightenment,ā€ youā€™d have a bunch of medievalists on your ass saying ā€œfuck off.ā€ So I have no clue where Hazonyā€™s getting this idea. Even the example he uses here, Steven Pinkerā€™s quote, feels extremely threadbare. Steven Pinker isnā€™t a historian, heā€™s a linguist and pop academic, and his claim here isnā€™t really a historical one. There is no sense in Pinkerā€™s work that he cares about establishing an argument about the enlightenment era, proving that it was the first time a set of ideas were had. No, heā€™s talking about the ideology the enlightenment is known for, empiricism, democracy, limits on government, secular reasoning, etc. His book is about how great liberalism is, not about how John Locke was super original and stuff. So, yeah, without any kind of evidence for Hazonyā€™s ridiculous claim, I have to assume itā€™s not true. Since thatā€™s how claims work lol.

Conservatives: traditional knowledge is best and we should listen to it over new interests Indigenous peoples: the knowledge of our nations, which predate the United States, say we should take care of the planet and not abuse its resources Conservatives: not like that

"Most of the progress we've made has come from conservative traditions." Yeah, that's not how words work.

I like how they took credit for common sense as if not touching a hot stove is an exclusively conservative viewpoint.

"Conservatism is good because a lot of influential historical figures were conservatives." "Universal rationality is bad because Hitler used universal rationality, and he was bad." I swear to God, this is how a child argues about politics...

I love how PragerU ignores the fact that ancient China was at one point the most advanced and "best", but then it got too into itself and closed itself off, letting other civilizations catch up and even go past their progress. This left China in a bad position. Progress is a good thing, challenging old ideas is a good thing. At one point humans thought that animals appeared out of thin air, and that Earth was the center of the universe, then we challenged those ideas and learned what is actually correct. Tradition and old thinking isn't always the best.

I literally laughed out loud when Tradition Man said we need to combat "dogmas" through adherance to tradition. Like, how can someone stare straight at their own cognitive dissonance like that for the entirety of the video making process without realizing it?

Isnā€™t it weird how PragerU refers to huge historical events in terms of individuals, rather than as parts of a system

I have a master degree in philosophy and bringing up "common sense" in an argument during debates was always considered lazy. Common sense is really subjective and hard to define.

Science isn't bad, Hitler's science was bad. I also love how their little graphic for feminism is just like, 3 women. Like, "Uh oh, watch out everybody, it's ~tHe WoMeN.~"

One problem with tradition is that everyone has different traditions, so they can never be used objectively.
