Thereā€™s an interview where Jordan Peele says he had the actor do the tear scene multiple times and he said it was all authentic on each on take.

Good analysis, but there's so much more than storytelling (which I think it's the most abused word in the visual arts nowadays!). I'll quote one of the best filmmakers of our generation: "Some say that cinema is about telling a good story and I find that so sad. Do you know what we already have to tell stories? Books. Films are better for conveying emotions." - Carlos Reygadas

as an actor, i can tell the tear is clearly from dry eyes, as u can see he did not blink before the tear drops.

Such a cool scene. There's a suggestion of being underwater in the "Sunken Place", with tiny bubbles floating through frame and the typical muffling of sound and high frequencies heard when listening underwater. But he's not really underwater of course; it's more of an idea that an actual submerged place.

Michael Caine said (and I am paraphrasing) that the trick is showing the actor trying not to cry, which creates the emotion. The whole hypnosis slant really turned that around. I guess its due to the fear of losing all control.
