Skip to the end for tips on staying awake. I had an AP math class two semesters ago that assigned a TON of homework, and I would generally stay up to 3:00 and get 2-5 hrs of sleep to try and keep up with my own "homework schedule" for that week. The teacher for that class had the most monotone, quiet, try-not-to-fall-asleep-challenge voice ever. I fell asleep in that class maybe twice, but I happened to sit next to a friend who would squeeze my knees whenever I fell asleep. For some reason, I have this strange reaction where if my knees are squeezed, I instantly jolt awake. Drawback is it only works when someone else does it. The problem occurred not in the AP math class, but in the class immediately after. At the end of math class I would hobble out of class half asleep and say to myself, "YES! X days without incident!" Then realize I had Psychology afterwards. Psychology was a fun class, and the teacher was great, and also looked exactly like Professor Pym from Ant-Man. But it was an easy class, and after being drained by math, I would head-bob like you describe for most of the entire class, and I fell asleep about a dozen times. I got an A in both classes, even though i barely skid past math class with a 89.95 that my instructor rounded up. In psychology, I learned how to stay awake in that situation. Usually. What I would do is hold a pencil in my left hand, and hover the eraser just above the table. Whenever I felt the pencil touch the table, I would know I was just about to head bob, and I would remind myself to stay awake, and it would much lessen the intensity of my head bobs. But then some days I just said "fuck it my other classes are more important." And fell asleep TL;DR hover your pencil vertically with the eraser almost but not quite touching the table, when it touches the table you remind yourself to stay awake and hold back up the pencil. Greatly reduces head bob intensity.
