Actually, he was born in 1990, which he sings about in his song "30"!

You missed the really important line, "My dad was happier than I am!" With this line, and the fact Bo was Born in 1990, I assume Bo is wishing to be his dad in 1985 because it was before Scott had a kid, and assumedly, before he had many responsibilities, He believes his dad was happiest before Bo was Born.

I always interpreted this song to be about the generation Bo's dad belonged to. "He walks into a room and everyone respects him, he reads the news and doesn't let that shit effect him", "My oblivious white dad in the mid 80s", "My dad was happier than I am" The way that generation tends to talk to people younger than them, always makes it sound like we're whiny, (letting the news effect us), all the while they got things handed to them, when we have to fight to be respected. It feels like he's both idolizing that generation of people, while also calling them out for giving us crap, even though a lot of problems we have to deal with on a daily basis weren't a thing back then. "He's got a job and a family, how does he do it?" reminds me, someone who is thinking about having kids, that back then you could support a family with just one salary, when today, we need two just to pay for a tiny appartment. Then during the part where he goes "Wait..." he starts talking about how people still did have issues back then, people just both tend to forget about it because of nostalgia and they just dealt with them differently. Back then aids happened and everyone pointed at gay people, and now we're trying to solve the issue of gay people still being stigmatized... I dunno, to me personally, it just feels like he's kinda calling out both people who idolize those good old days that never existed, and the generation of people that were alive back then and are now giving younger people crap. Might just be my Gen Z point of view though.

You should definitely react to a lot of other songs Bo made as well. They're fkn genius. Like "Lower your expectations", "straight white male" , "Goodbye", "Ironic" or "Words, Words, Words".

"If i could be anybody dead or alive i would wanna be my dad in 1985" is my favorite line

I think the 1985 might be when his dad was 30? Because he had turned 30 during the creation of inside and he wanted to have an easy life like his dad at his age. He even talks about how his grandfather at the age of 27 he was in the war and when he was 27 he built a birdhouse. It’s like a small theme of comparing his accomplishments to his elder’s when they were his age while making his seem insignificant.

Knox reactions to Bo Burnham are my favourites. He just understands the vibes, the dry humour and the meanings behind the songs. Amazing, I'd love to watch more Bo on this channel! No matter which song. "How the World works" is an amazing, deep song tho! Or "problematic" if you want to talk about the problems of cancel culture. 👍

The line about Italians isn’t a joke or about fascist Italy or anything. It’s about Italians not being considered white yet, and therefore experiencing racial prejudice. This my sound absurd today, but it has long history in the US. Europe too, for that matter. It’s a long standing prejudice that southern Italians from the Mediterranean islands with their darker skin were supposedly more lazy, violent und stupid than northern Italians, from regions closer to Austria or Switzerland with their lighter skin. Italians aren’t the only example of this either. The Irish faced similar issues. Google ‘no Irish signs’ or ‘no Italians signs’. You’ll be surprised at the signs and newspaper articles that pop up.

What really colors this song, for me, is that this is the first time Bo Burnham (the character, not the performer) has ever spoken positively about his father. Even in a disparaging way because he wishes he could be as oblivious and stupid as his dad so he could be as happy as he dad was. Like his relationship with his father ranges from outright hostility to utter apathy, and it's mentioned at least once a special that they have tenuous relations at best. But this is the first time he says he admires anything about the man, even in a bitter envious way.
