Do you know Walt Disney himself, and the company itself through 2010, would allow the writers MONTHS to work out the stories? Walt once threw out six months worth of work by his storyboard artists/writers when it became apparent to them and him the direction of the film wasn't working. (Pinocchio was delayed because they weren't happy with the character design). A writer on Toy Story 3 took six weeks to unknot a story problem and everyone was cool with that and liked his solution. Now, things are rushed through to feed the content pipeline and there's no time given to put something aside, ponder it, and rework it if necessary.

As 42 year old, unabashed old school Disney fan, it's so depressing to see what this company has become. I was raised by my Grandma, sitting on her lap as she sang classic Disney songs while playing the piano. We watched VHS copies of everything from the 30s to the early 80s, it was my everything and Robin Hood '73 is still my favorite animated film of all-time. I remember when every animated Disney release was an event, and even in my early teens, movies like Lion King were amazing and still cool to like. I know that period will never return so I guess we should just appreciate the classics and how good things once were.

The other day my daughter saw some Wish merchandise at the store and said something to the effect of "it's a Disney movie so it's probably going to be bad." My experience as a child of the 80s/90s was the exact opposite. You knew it would be good. I don't think Disney will ever be what they once were. My kids prefer DreamWorks and Illumination.

For me, the peak 3D animated Disney film has to be Wreck It Ralph. It had a twist villain, but it was properly built up to and the reveal was extremely rewarding. It had a fulfilling arc for the main character. Funny non-human side characters that never overstayed their welcome. Awesome, fleshed out cast, even for side characters. Disney even got to put in references to outside IPs without it feeling forced or out of place! How amazing is that???

I'm kind of done accepting "it's for kids" as an excuse. As Jeremy said, there's a difference between movies for kids and movies for families- but even old school Sesame Street had references and jokes that made parents who were in the same room as the TV smile, and understood how not to make those same parents grit their teeth and mutter "it's for the kids" under their breath. Kids AND adults deserve better, and even post-Disney+ Disney should understand what makes parents decide not to put a particular Blu-Ray in someone's stocking.

Tangled was the last truly genuine, great Disney animated feature film. It was the 50th animated Disney film. They used a very expensive animation process that combined hand drawn and computer based animation and merged it seamlessly. In that movie there was so much love and respect for Disney’s past while being fresh and amazing all on its own. The music, acting and side characters were all extremely well done and memorable too. Since then it’s just been a slow, downward spiral. Utterly sad.

I offer one of my favorite C.S. Lewis quotes: "A children's story that is enjoyed by only children, is a bad children's story."
