One of the most important principles of writing that I know, which is not mentioned here, is, āDonāt tell, show.ā You can hear this principle in action in two very fine songs of the late 1960ās, āWho Knows Where The Time Goes,ā by Sandy Denny, and āChanges,ā by Phil Ochs. Both songs deal powerfully with the same subject, the bittersweet passing of a relationship with time, without actually telling us about it directly. Both songs are available on YouTube, and are must-listens for anyone who is serious about learning how to write great lyrics.
