Ocarina & Majora are phenomenal games, but man if Romani & Cremiaâs dynamic isnât just the most heartbreaking thing. Youâve got 2 sisters in their own after the deaths of both their parents, with Cremia doing her best to make ends meet. Just like Link in Ocarina, she has to force herself to mature quicker to take on all the responsibilities of Romani Ranch. The context of the Chateau Romani beverage and letting Romani drink it is so dark.
Anyone with a younger sibling knows how frustrating it can be to worry about your siblings at times. Youâll bicker with them, and some times you want nothing to do with them, but you still want the best for them. Cremiaâs frustration with Romaniâespecially prior to âthemâ coming down to the ranch and kidnapping herâis pretty realistic; the uptight elder sibling who had to mature quicker than theyâd have liked to, just out of the desire to protect the younger sibling. Thereâs the aspect of her saying âwhen youâre older,â denying giving the younger sibling what they want just for their safety that really makes Cremia feel more realistic. When I first played Majoraâs Mask and saw the sisters in the bar after learning about the alcoholic properties of the milk, it made me tear up a bit understanding why Cremia let Romania have the drink.
As stated in the video, in the final hours of a 3 day cycle in the game, we see how all the characters process their impending demise, and whether or not they can accept death and how they even will. Cremia letting her sister drink the Chateau Romani in the hopes that itâll dull her senses enough or cause her to pass out JUST so she wonât be aware of the worldâs end is bittersweet. By that point, sheâs resigned herself to that fate, but even in the end she wants to keep her sister naive to their fate. Itâd be a mercy if she had her sister drink her fill just so she dies in her sleep from alcohol poisoning, before theyâre engulfed by the inferno from the Moonâs descent and the worldâs collapse. The writing of Majoraâs Mask is just fascinating to me!

Imo, when it comes to THIS Link's journey and thematic story, you can include Twilight Princess as the 3rd game in a Trilogy. The Hero's Shade and how he interacts with his descendent, how he talks of "regrets", it fits perfectly with Majora's Mask. The Hero himself becomes a restless spirit, and the hero from TP has to help him find peace.

You know what I love about old school Nintendo? Characters like Grog. Heâs a character outcasted from his family who hates his mother and father. A family with a bitter history between each other. It hits pretty close to reality. And Iâm the end the hero canât help Grog, and he meets a dark fate.
Stand out characters like these make the world feel real to me. Thereâs a story here of a mundane broken family that will never be told directly to the player. And itâs sad weâll probably never get characters like this ever again.

one of my core memories as a kid was when I figured out that my dad would wake up at like 4 or 5 in the morning to play ocarina of time- so, naturally, I also started waking up at that time to watch him. i remember burying my head into his lap and covering my ears when he was fighting Dead Hand. Now as a 21 year old adult, if I happen to be in the same house as him when I'm playing OoT I try and make him play both the bottom of the well and the royal tomb for me because hell no

I remember some of the things that scared me the most weren't the enemies, but the draw distance in the game. The large open areas really added a sense of loneliness that made me scared some sort of monster would come out. In Hyrule Field at night there are the huge Peahats and Stalfos at night!
Lake Hylia with its deep open water always scared me that some sort of huge fish would eat me. Thankfully that didn't happen, but in Majora's Mask my fears were answered with the dark water, Like-Likes, Skeleton fish and those huge Sea Snakes!
The Haunted wasteland in Ocarina of time was frightening with the sandstorm obscuring everything, like Subnautica on land! And the Twinmold boss fight was like that nightmare fully realized!

Romani is still one of the most fucked up characters in video game history. A 9-year-old child whose mind gets melted by alien abduction. Even if you manage to save her from said abduction, she still has to live through the apocalypse. But no worries, her older sister chooses to let her get drunk for the first time in her life so her senses are dulled and she doesn't have to experience the full terror of the moon crashing into the earth. Just a fun light-hearted video game.

Romani's older sister is literally the most heartaching part about this game. Fully aware that the world is at its end and keeping her younger sisters innocence just so she won't know reality is quite literally crashing down on her. I love that there are characters in this game that have layers over them.

Regarding Dead Hand (spoiler for some extremely disturbing content):
I don't think his red splotches are him covered in blood. I learned that, when a body decays in real life, it will start to have these red splotches appear where the blood starts pooling inside. It's called marbling, and it makes Dead Hand even more disturbing because you're fighting a half-rotten corpse in a Nintendo game (that's not Eternal Darkness).

I still remember playing Majora's Mask for the first time and having to wrap my head around the idea that everyone I know and love is going to die. It was a lot for my 14 year old me to handle, and I believe this game is what let me to find my personal philosophy about my eventual demise. Just like Link running around clock town helping alleviate the anguish of those who destined to perish, to want to live my sort life making sure everyone around me will have just a little less weight on their shoulders. I don't think any pace of art has affected my psyche as much as this game. sorry for the ramble, thanks for the read!

One small thing that made me look at the hero of time in a whole other light was the hug he got from cremia. âYou feel all warm and fuzzy inside. SighâŚyou could get used to this.â I love how much this humanised link as he grew up an orphan and the closest thing he had to a parental figure was a tree that died in front of him. This was his first time experiencing motherly affection and itâs so bittersweet.
